Being a Maid of Honor is more than just an honor. It is also a job with a few simple yet serious responsibilities. You probably already know this which is why you have stumbled or searched for this article. This is good, you have already shown signs that you will be a great help to the bride.
My guide will help you define your roles as a Maid of Honor, and give advice on the best way to fill those roles. I will also try to touch on a few common mistakes that can be easily avoided.
The Helper
You will find that this is your most time consuming role. The Bride will probably ask you to be at her side through a large portion of the wedding planning process. During these times, you will find that Bridal magazines are one of the best sources for gathering decorating ideas, defining the desired impressions in the wedding dress, and finding wedding planning tips. You will most likely spend several hours at a time looking through multiple foot-high stacks of Bridal and wedding planning magazines.
The Caretaker
Wedding planning can be lots of fun, but it can also be a source of much stress for the bride. I have found that most brides put off, and sometimes completely forget to take care of themselves both physically and mentally. This is usually one of the major causes of the "Bridezilla" syndrome. As the Maid of Honor, you will need to force the bride to take breaks. Try taking her to her favorite restaurant, or perhaps a trip to the Day Spa trip. It does not really matter as long as her mind is given a rest from the stress of planning.
The Supporter
Weddings are always scary for the bride. At some point and sometimes multiple points, the bride will begin to question the wisdom of the marriage. This is always a healthy reaction when someone is dealing with issues that affect his / her entire life. Your job will be to reassure and comfort her through these times. Do not worry, it does not usually happen very often, but it is inevitable in most cases.
The Manager
The bride is going to have a lot on her plate. You will probably have spent quite a bit of time with the bride which will most likely have given you a special knowledge of what she wants and does not want. For this reason, you will know how things should be placed, and how things should be running. This is less of a managerial position, but more than a second pair of eyes. You have the ability to spot mistakes and correct them.
