1. Ask questions
There are a million and one ways to have a wedding, and a bunch of different vendors that can help you on your way. In the same way that you've found your friends because of the way your personalities match, you can find vendors that mesh well with your personality. Why the focus on personality? Because you will be spending one of the most important days of your life with them. Where it matters the most: Your photographer and your DJ. You will most likely be with your photographer for part of the morning into the evening, so please make sure you like spending time with them! Your DJ will shape the atmosphere for dinner and after, so choose someone that you mesh well with. If you leave a meeting with them and you find yourself exhausted, confused, or overwhelmed, it's probably a sign you should pay attention to that they're not the best DJ for you.
2. Choose a venue that allows photography
You would not believe the rules that some churches have against photography! We are absolute 100% believers that you should be able to photograph one of the most important moments of your entire life. Before you book your ceremony, please please please make sure that you ask them what their policy is on photography, and get it in writing. Which is important enough that it is one of the things that you absolutely must do for your wedding:
3. Get it in writing
When there are large amounts of money flying around and promises being made left and right, it's so so important to get all the big decisions in writing. This is not asking too much, and in fact if you're dealing with professionals they should be the ones to provide the contracts. ** If you ask for promises in writing and you do not receive them in writing, this is a big red flag that should have you looking for another vendor.
4. Do not leave the morning after
Who's heard of this situation before – the bride and groom leave the wedding late and exhausted, only to have to be up and out by 4a to catch a red-eye flight for their honeymoon? You know it, you're going to want to sleep in the day after you get married. As much as you want to get to your honeymoon, even scheduling a flight for later in the day leaves plenty of time for breakfast in bed and cartoons.
5. Check reviews
Learning to search Google for good and bad reviews is so helpful when trying to distinguish between what businesses to hire and what businesses to pass on. Even something as simple as typing in the business's name and then the word "bad" or "scam" or "horrible" will help you find things that people have said about this business. And of course take everything with a grain of salt, but at the very least you know now what other people think about a certain business. Sometimes before we make decisions, we search for a product or service with the least amount of negative said about it. You can not please everyone, but good businesses will work with a frustrated customer to make it right.
6. Photography matters
It's unbelievable how many people have told us that if they could do it all again they would have hired better photographers! It breaks our heart hearing this time and time again. The church, the venue, the cake, and the party are all so important, but the photographs help you remember it all. ESPecially considering that the day flies by so fast, you want to be able to walk through the memories again and again. To be able to show your kids and grand-kids your wedding day with beautiful pictures is just simply invaluable.
