When shopping for a bridal gown, you will see many beautiful choices. Not all of them will look as great on you as they did on the hanger, though. In many cases that is because they were not the right cut for your type of figure. Brides who have boyish figures will find that they have many great options for a wedding gown, as long as they look at the right styles.
A boyish figure is one that is shaped more or less like a rectangle. That means having a smaller bust, a straight waist, and slim hips. A lot of women with this type of shape also have broader shoulders. Just like any body type, there are advantages and disadvantages when it comes to finding a wedding dress.
One of the largest advantages to a boyish figure is that you do not have to worry about dealing with big hips or a large tush. This means that you will not be trying to figure out how to hide all that "junk in the trunk" like the curvier brides will. The flip side of this, though, means that you will tend to look thicker in the waist than a bride with an hourglass figure.
The key is to create the illusion of a waist. There are many ways that this can be achieved. Brides with boyish figures are likely to find that gowns with a drop waist do not at all to flatter them. Without the natural curves to shape the bodice, the longer torso of a drop waist gown can end up looking very rectangular and blocky. Not the best look.
To play up your waist, seek out gowns with a seam at the natural waist. That separation will be a good place to start. You will want to choose a gown that has interesting details at waistline to help give you that cinched in curvy look. A ribbon or sash can be one simple accent that will go a long way. If you are tall, look for more dramatic detailing at the waist.
One really beautiful style is a wedding dress that has a wide piece of lace wrapped around the waist (even below the natural waistline). The right at the bride's waist, there should be a ribbon, sash, or belt to really give the illusion of shape. It can be even prettier when the lace has pearl and crystal beading on it. Wear pearl bridal jewelry to coordinate the gown and accessories. Or if you have the pearl bridal jewelry before you pick the gown, ask if some pearls can be added to a plainer dress.
Another way to add curves is with volume. Look for bridal gowns that have some fullness in the skirt. A very pretty style is a skirt with soft tiers of fabric or rows of ruffles (trust me, it can be very stylish, even if it sounds like something Carmen Miranda would wear!) fabric to your bottom half.
Brides with boyish figures should also take a look at empire waisted gowns, especially if they are small busted. You will not get the shape through the waist that was discussed above, but you can create the illusion of a fuller bustline. Look for empire waist gowns that have a lot of detail on the bodice. Elements like heavy embroidery, beading, lace, or ruffles are all a great way to make your bust look larger, and your whole frame less boxy.
There is a perfect wedding gown out there for every bride. It is just a matter of matching the right dress to the right woman. If you have a boyish figure, there are many styles that will be very flattering to your figure.
