When it comes to choosing your wedding location, we're not simply talking about the Chapel or Reception venue. We're talking what part of the country or world will those specific places be in, what part of the country or world will your guests be traveling too for your special day or weekend, and most importantly, why.
The location of your wedding will fall into one of these categories: Hometown and Local, Destination, or "In The Middle." The general area in which you decide to have the ceremony and reception plays such a big role in the overall feeling, style and theme of your wedding, it's important to sit down and really consider a number of factors before considering more specific terms and vendors.
Mobility of Guests
If guests are coming from all over the country, maybe choose a "middle of the road" location. While this does create more destination wedding scenario (more to come on that on Wednesday!), It makes the actual trip more worthy for your guests. Places like Colorado or New Orleans are in the middle of the country and offer a wide variety of more specific events (and, more importantly, hotels) for you to eventually choose from after settling on the location.
If guests are located in one central area, sometimes your hometowns, consider finding amazing and memorable local venues. This actually puts a very personal touch on the location of the wedding. For example, it's very traditional to get married in the Bride's hometown. There are many ways to make a hometown wedding modern, fun and exciting for guests who are not traveling all that far.
Budget
If you are working with a smaller budget, consider a location that is going to offer a number of vendor choices. Larger cities have far more caterers, photographers and musicians (allowing for more competitive pricing) than, say, a rural area in Montana. If you are working with a larger budget, get creative and make the location a key part of your wedding. A tropical resort or exclusive dude ranch often have wedding and event packages that not only cater to the bridal party, but to every guest in attendance.
Accessibility
When I say accessibility, I do not mean for the guests. I mean for YOU, the Bride. If you plan to be very hands-on, then stick with a location closer to where you are currently living OR where you feel most comfortable over-seeing and delegating from a distance (for example, your hometown). If you are set on a destination or far-away place, consider finding a wedding planner in the area (more to come on that tomorrow!) And relinquish your dream and vision to that team.
Meaning
Do not forget: this is your wedding! If there is a park that you MUST be married in even though it's tough for your dream-guest-list to get to, it's OK to be a little selfish and make your own dreams come true! Guests understand it's your day and just as you are going to do everything in your power to have them all there, they are going to do everything in their power to be there.
Location should have as much meaning to you and your fiance as the words you utter when your vows. The location is the place not only where guests come together, but where you two are coming together forever. Create possibilities to have all your nearest and dearest right there with you and you will have your perfect day!
