Wedding songs are an integral part of your wedding, in much the same way flowers are, but many couples fail to realize how important their choice of wedding songs and music is.
Your choice of music for your wedding is a personal one, however it is also a choice that should have made according to the style of your wedding. The music you choose, from the processional through to the last dance, will set the tone for your whole wedding so it should also complement your wedding as well as being a reflection of your own musical tastes.
This is where most couples stumble. Musical tastes are diverse, from punk to classical, many of us will choose one genre of music, which we will generally stick with throughout our lives, although we may also listen to music from across genres if it appeals to us. Your choice of genre can there before present a dilemma, weddings are not the place for death metal anthems, neither are they the place for slow songs about dying love or breaking up! (I will survive should not be on your playlist!). So you need to consider songs which are appropriate for your wedding, but which you like also.
For your funeral you will need to choose music for the processional (walking down the aisle) and the recessional (walking back up the aisle). For a civil service you can not have any music that has religious references and likewise some religious institutions may frown upon modern music being played. Many events will have a list of what they will refer to as 'most popular' songs, often these are songs that they have approved for use in their venue. Always consider what is on this list, it can give you an idea of what to look for if nothing else!
You will need to find music to play through your reception also. Apart from the evening entertainment, where you may have a DJ who can organize the music for you, you will need some background music for your cocktail hour, music for your first dance and the father / daughter dance, music for the cake cutting ceremony and possibly a last dance.
With the exception of the dances, most couples will choose instrumental music, sometimes classical or simply instrumental versions of favorite songs. The first dance song will traditionally be a song favored by the couple and sometimes known to them as 'their song', it may a song that was playing when they met or a song where the lyrics hold some special meaning.
No matter what your preferred genre of music, your wedding music will require you to look across all genres for the perfect wedding songs. The style of your wedding may dictate a certain genre, while a themed wedding could require the playing of some very specific styles of music. But whatever the style or theme of your wedding, your choice of music should be a personal one and one which will leave a lasting memory for both you and your guests.
