In the past decade or so, we have been witnesses to the sudden rise of the metrosexuals. Thanks to unabashed commercialism and Hollywood, the need for natural beauty products among the Y-chromosome population has reached new levels. Men are going crazy now for both the conventional lab-designed and alternative organic acne treatment, pore reduction moisturizers, skin whitening lotions, and various hair products.

Men are becoming ultra-conscious of their overall appearance and want to present themselves in the best way possible. This phenomenon is not really new according to sociologists since males naturally groom themselves to attract suitable partners. The current culture, however, is beyond what was previously observed and has a mass effect that is quite different.

Whatever it is that brings men together inside beauty parlors today, commercial suppliers are taking note of and are offering the latest cosmetic, and skin and hair care products. Specialists say that men will no longer suffer the embarrassment of using the products of their mothers, wives, and sisters. New products that are made especially for men are now widely available.

These products have stronger formulation and more active ingredients that suit the more active lifestyle. Men are naturally careless, laboratories say. Hence, they are releasing products that don’t require meticulous application but are as effective as those used by women.

A more noticeable feature in most products is the scent or the lack of it. This was the most deliberate alteration that health and beauty products made on their lines. For instance, some organic acne treatments have no scent at all and are preferred by more men. A few skin moisturizers and hair gels are either devoid of any hint of fragrance.

Some items add a touch of the latest men’s perfumes, of which the popular ones today are no longer musky or woody. This is quite ironic according to perfumeries since they expect men to stick to more masculine smells now that they have their own health and beauty products. Still, the result is that the line dividing the products for both sexes is getting blurred and some men prefer something flora, or a little soapiness and fruitiness in their sporty colognes, aftershaves, and other hair and skin products.

A number of gentlemen are also practicing some sort of layering. Some wear at least two different scents, one of which is rubbed or sprayed on the skin and another on the clothes. Some prefer to use body moisturizers with a tinge of perfume or body sprays, which they cover with another perfume. Certain individuals use women’s fragrances either as a base or a cover for a masculine counterpart.

In terms of function, hair products for most men have remained almost the same as it was decades ago. The coat and tie still use pomades that are basically some robust version of the hair gels of younger and hippier crowds. The former is just less greasy and smells less waxy than what the granddaddies used. The fixative agents also are more washable and manageable to allow them fix hairs to the latest do.

Naturalists believe that men are more conscious of their appearance today. This elevated awareness doesn’t require a new label of sexuality since men have been grooming themselves thousands of years. Marketing experts, however, maintain that the trend sometimes bring along names to define an era. Amusingly, men don’t care about such arguments, and they rarely talk about their natural beauty products.
