Celtic wedding invitations often feature Celtic knots. Celtic knots consist of a variety of, usually, endless knots. The patterns have their origins in the late Roman empire and were used by the Celts. Early Christian manuscripts contain Celtic knots along with other art such as illustrations of animals and plants. However, there is no known religious significance to the patterns.
Celtic themed wedding invitations remain popular even when the latest fashion dictates a more modern style. It is despite the simplicity and symmetry that joins couples. Or maybe it is the endless nature of the knots. A symbol of endless love, a sign of their commitment to each other. For whatever reason a couple chooses their wedding stationery they will not be disappointed with the variety available.
Commonly this style of stationery is set on Cream textured card. Hammered card is the most popular, because because it adds a rustic or more traditional feel. Early paper would not have been as refined as today and therefore would have had a texture. It is only modern paper production techniques that allow us to produce "ultra" smooth paper. Parchment rather than paper is sometimes used with Celtic wedding invitations. Modern parchment is not parchment in the traditional sense as it is plant based rather than animal based.
Fonts that accompanie this style of card are often script or calligraphy type fonts. Some fonts are based on early Christian manuscripts and try to recreate their hand-drawn style.
Often to accompany the Celtic knots are Gold / Silver foil highlights, embossing or a combination of the two. Sometimes colored ink is used but this is not as common.
The use of embossing and gold / silver foil is often reflected in the price. This is due to the techniques for applying embossing and foil can be more expensive and time consuming than other printing methods. However, as with everything you buy, shopping around pays. There are goods deals to be had, especially online.
Other Celtic invitations include symbols of roses, thistles and shamrocks. You could pay a Calligrapher to hand write your wedding invitations. This gives your cards a personal touch as they will all be slightly different. You can also have the names of your guests written in each card. A variety of colored ink is available and the invitations can be decorated with symbols and patterns. The more decorative the cards, the more expensive they will be. However, they can be made unique to you and are bound to impress your friends and family.
If your budget can not stretch to hand written cards then do not worry. There are many well designed and good quality invitations available online and at the high street. Most can be personalized with your wedding details and some can be printed with your guests' names.
