Men are often taught to not place much importance on what they wear. There’s a cultural mindset that men are not supposed to dress well. They are supposed to be unkempt, rugged individuals.
But most men do realize that the way you look can influence your chances of success. We’ve all heard that you never have a second chance to make a first impression. Humans are visual creatures, and the way someone is dressed is a large part of that visual image.
Here are 5 tips on what not to wear to work:
1. Sneakers with everything
If you are young and work in a trendy industry such as advertising, or in a very casual environment where you don’t meet customers, wearing cool sneakers with a suit can be hip and attractive
In most business environments, sneakers with a suit just doesn’t work. You need classy dress shoes with a power suit, and more casual leather shoes with business casual wear.
2. Pants without a belt
A belt literally ties your outfit together. If you’re dressing up, it’s an accessory that creates a tasteful, elegant look.
If you work in a casual environment and wear your shirt over your pants, you can forgo a belt, as long as your pants aren’t too slouchy. But if you wear your shirt tucked into your pants, you need a belt to finish your look. Even if your pants don’t need help staying up, a classy leather belt adds an extra dimension of style to your ensemble.
3. Wrong shoes with pants
Men, you may not need as many pairs of shoes as women need, but don’t think that one pair of shoes fits everything in your wardrobe. Here’s how to match your shoes to your outfit:
Thick soled shoes work with business casual wear such as khakis. They don’t look right with slim-fit dress pants or a fitted suit. With clothes that are more fitted to your body, your shoes will be clunky and incongruous with the rest of your outfit.
4. The wrong socks
Picture the immaculately dressed business man. He’s wearing a sharp charcoal grey suit, and a crisp white shirt. He’s well groomed, and has polished dress shoes. Then he sits down and totally destroys his look. How? Two inches of white socks poke out of his shoes.
Yes, socks are a small item, but too many men sabotage their business look with this small detail.
5. White socks are for sporting activities, but a no-no for business wear. If you aren’t sure what to wear, wear black socks with business clothes, even with jeans.
