Every Latter day Saint bride will face the issue of choosing their LDS wedding gown as their wedding approaches. The main question is whether you should choose a temple-ready wedding gown, or wear a temple dress specifically for your temple ceremony.

Wedding Gown/Dress
You can by all means choose a wedding dress for your special day, but as you know there are certain requirements for the bride’s dress if she is to wear it for the temple ceremony. In this case it must be ‘temple ready.’
To be ‘temple ready’ it must follow these rules:
It needs to have long sleeves.
It cannot have a train.
It should have a floor-length skirt.
It should be white.
It should give quite a lot of coverage, without a low-cut front or being backless
Unfortunately many wedding dresses don’t fit the above profile (in fact they seldom do!), so what can you do?
One option, if the dress isn’t temple ready is to wear a dickie over it or sleeve extensions, but these can be cumbersome and all of those layers uncomfortable. Also consider that in this case no one will actually be able to see the wedding dress anyway!
You could also just go ahead and buy any one that you love and have it adjusted to make it temple ready. This is possible, but be warned that adjustments may not always look perfect, as you’re adding parts, such as sleeves, to a dress that weren’t there before.
You could choose a wedding gown that ISN’T temple ready and change into it to wear it for wedding pictures outside of the temple and the reception.
Even if you choose a dress to wear only outside of the temple, remember that it will still need to be modest as an LDS wedding gown should be! So you’ll need to avoid gowns which are very low-cut and aim for at least small sleeves.
PROS:
You’ll be able to wear your wedding gown in the temple ceremony if it’s temple ready and won’t need to change.
Wedding dresses often look a little nicer in photographs than a temple dress.
You’ll have more freedom to choose wedding gown style.
CONS:
You’ll need to cover the dress if it’s not temple ready which means no one will see it
You may have to get changed during your day which is a bit of a fuss
Temple Dress
A temple dress will make your life easier and can most likely be supplied by the temple (if you don’t have one). This is because by wearing it you guarantee that there will be no issues for the temple ceremony, such as modifying a wedding gown or having to wear a dickie.
Given that most people will see you mainly outside of the temple and at the reception you can, if you can bear to get changed once, have your cake and eat it! Go with the temple dress for the ceremony, but then choose a more elaborate wedding dress for pictures and your reception!
PROS:
Easy and certainly temple ready.
Most people will see you after the temple ceremony anyway.
CONS:
You will need to get changed at some point during what will be a busy day.
You will not be able to wear your own unique wedding gown during the ceremony.
Overall, it’s probably easier to choose a temple dress for your temple ceremony and then change into your wedding dress later, as a Mormon bride has many other things to focus on during the day as well!
