The first VMAs happened in 1984. Ronald Reagan, a former actor, was president. It was held in Radio City Music Hall for the first ever MTV VMAs. In one recent interviews, MTV executives said they had a hard time getting guests to perform on the show given that they were just starting out. No one was paying attention to them. They approached Madonna, who at time was also starting out but was already fast establishing herself as a radical singer, to open for the show. Surprisingly she agreed but she has exclusive rights to what she will do on stage.
She decided to open the show with her lacy wedding gown singing Like A Virgin. She had a wardrobe malfunction when her dress was pulled down while performing exposing herself to the whole world. MTV VMAs unveiled the design of their trophy which is an image of Buzz Aldrin saluting to the flag of America in their first moon trip. Michael Jackson took home three of these for Thriller.
Pop music was never the same again.
In 1985, Eddie Murphy hosted the show. This year, more class a celebrities agreed to perform including Sting. The night's highlight was, however, the USA for Africa all star ensemble lead by Michael Jackson, Tina Turner and Bruce Springsteen.
Madonna got involved in two more historical moment. She was being interviewed when Courtney Love started throwing things at her. The latest one is her lip lock with Britney Spears and Cristina Aguillera. Britney and Christina first took the stage singing the same song Madonna sang in the very first MTV VMA, Like A Virgin. They were both the brides. Madonna came out as the groom and kissed them both.
Another returning figure is Michael Jackson. He presented his bride, Lisa Marie Presley, to the world by opening the VMAs with Lisa Marie in hand. After a saying, "And everyone thought, this will not last", he kissed his bride. It was the first time the world saw Michael Jackson kissing a woman in public.
Two more unforgettable moments involved a dress. Lil Kim appeared in a wardrobe that left little to the imagination. A private part is actually expose. This was to be somewhat duplicated by Howard Stern. He appeared with his behind fully exposed. He even interrupted Metallica's acceptance speech to show give the world and the band an up close and personal encounter. One of those rare moments when Metallica is upstaged.
Perhaps one of the shocking, odd and funny moment happened recently. Taylor Swift saying "Imma let you finish but Beyonce made one of the best videos of all time." Of all time. " He has apologized several times.
MTV VMAs remains to the more exciting awards show that is aimed at giving us all a glimpse at the crazy business of music and celebrities.
