You're Not Made Of Money, But You Can Look Like You Are!
Not everyone can buy the latest Tom Ford suit or accord a brand new pair of Crockett and Jones wingtips and that is fine. You do not have to spend a million bucks to look like a million bucks. Here are some tips on how to look good on a budget: tips
Forget About Brand Names
This may be tough for some of you, but with most luxury clothing no one will know the brand name unless they ask or are deeply into the fashion world. Most suits do not have the logo plastered across the front, same goes for shoes and ties. Buy what you can afford and wear it with confidence.
Thrift Stores Are Your Friend
There is nothing wrong with hiring up a thrift store for a vintage blazer or suit. I have found some of my favorite pieces either online or in thrift stores. Give it a shot. It is actually a lot of fun.
eBay!
I buy most of my blazers on eBay. The key to being able to buy suits and blazers on eBay is to know your measurements so go visit your tailor and ask him / her to write down your measurements for you. There is a ton of quality used clothing on eBay and a ton of new clothing at discounted prices.
My Personal eBay Tips
- For auctions, do not place a bid until late in the auction. There is no point in driving up the price for everyone at the start
- Check out the "best offer" listings. I have thrown out a $ 30 offer on things listed for $ 90 and ended up winning the item
- KNOW YOUR MEASUREMENTS!
My Favorites That Will Not Break Your Bank
The Tie Bar (thetiebar.com) – has an excellent selection of ties, pocket squares, socks and of course tie bars at phenomenal prices. $ 15 a tie and $ 8 a pocket square. The quality is great, the company is all over social media and the customer service is top notch.
Indochino (indochino.com) – sells made to measure suits for very reasonable prices. The quality is not going to be the same as a $ 4,000 suit but it is a quality, fully customizable suit for a very good price. You can customize everything from contrast buttons to lining to functional boutonnière to suspender buttons. The first suit may not fit great but once you nail the measurements you will be ordering suits left and right
Frank & Oak (frankandoak.com) – has a great selection of men's wear with almost everything being priced at less than $ 50. Frank & Oak update their inventory every month and send out info on the new goods in a magazine format. They use quality materials, have phenomenal customer service and an interesting concept in The Hunt Club. The Hunt Club allows you to order up to 3 items per month in a "crate." Once your crate arrives you can try on the clothes, keep what you want and send the rest back. Shipping is free both ways and is hassle-free.
Lands End (landsend.com) – has excellent sales and stylish clothes / shoes at great prices. Check out the "on the counter" part of the sales section to find heavily discounted items
Etsy (etsy.com) – This one may be somewhat unexpected, but Etsy is a great place to find handmade lapel flowers and pocket squares. The great thing about these handmade pieces is that they are unique. There are tons of interesting items on Etsy so put aside a little bit of time and browse the site.
