The practice of giving wedding favors has its roots in the 13th century when wealthy European aristocracy would gift the female wedding guests a small decorative box made from porcelain or crystal into would placed a sweet treat such as sugar cubes or some other delicate confection.
As time passed sugar, which was a rare commodity only afforded by the rich in the 13th century, became more spacious available and wedding favors became popular with couples of all means. Today giving your guests wedding favors that consist of lumps of sugar may be met by a few raised eyebrows, to say the least! But they are a number of other traditional style favors you could give.
Candles have always been a popular choice for favors. They offer a perfect alternative to edible favors and the range of color choices makes them easy to coordinate to any wedding style or theme. Packaging them in boxes sometimes with a nice holder included makes an ideal favor choice for a formal wedding, whilst fabric bags and a book of personalized matches is ideal for a more casual wedding.
Keep to traditional candle styles though such as votives, tea lights or even small pillar candles. Themed, photographed and shaped candles do not coordinate very well to a traditional style.
Almonds are the ultimate in traditional favors. Sugared or candy covered almonds should be given in either three's or fives to symbolize health, wealth, happiness, fertility and longevity. The bitterness of the almond and the sweetness of the coating is said to represent the bitter-sweetness of married life.
An alternative to almonds are almond shaped chocolate dragees which can be found with colored candy coatings. You can give these in any number you like, although it can be nice to follow the tradition above and give them in three's or fives.
Miniature wedding bells are another traditional style wedding favor. These little bells, which should ring, are given to your guests with instructions that they should ring them each time the bride and groom leave or enter the room. Upon hearing the tinkling bells, the couple has to kiss!
Aside from the favors themselves there is also a choice of traditional style packaging in which place to place your favors. Follow the tradition from the 13th century and give only to your female guests a favor presented in a decorative trinket box. This should be made of materials such as porcelain, silver or crystal.
Tulle nets are another traditional style way of wrapping benefits, although not as old as the trinket boxes. These how, can take some skill to perfect or they otherwise look like rather limp offerings! If you can not perfect them yourself there are plenty of people on the internet who offer to make them up for you. Finally fabric bags in luxury materials such as silk or satin where another traditional way to package favors. Today these little bags are readily available and come in a rainbow of colors, making them an easy and affordable option.
