Although this will be your big day and you want to be eye catching in your wedding dress, there is still certain etiquette to be followed. This protocol will ensure that on your wedding day, you will not be embarrassed but instead you will be appreciated and praised. Remember, this etiquette does not only apply to the bride or groom, but to everyone who will be joining in this celebration. Whether the wedding is formal or themed, each individual must wear the proper attire.
Keep in mind that the dresses of the groom, groomsmen, bridesmaid, best man, and maid-of-honor must coordinate with the bride's dress. Their dresses should not be similar but still manage to match the style, color, and design of the wedding dress. The guests should then wear their dresses according to the dress code provided in the invitation. For example, if the theme is an informal beach wedding then they should wear a more casual dress that fits a beach theme.
The Bride
The bride's dress should be different from the rest of her bridal party and guests. It is her time to shine so there should not be anyone wearing the same style and design as she does. The bride can choose to wear an heirloom dress, a dress that is passed on from generation to generation to each female in the family. If the bride chooses to purchase her own dress she may do so.
The Groom
The groom should wear a suit that will complement the bride's dress, not the other way around. To be guided about what to wear, you and your partner must decide on the dress and prepare the suit before the time comes. For example, if the bride wears a long and flowing white dress, the groom should wear a cutaway suit.
Bridesmaids and Groomsmen
Their dresses should also compliment the bride's dress. Traditionally, their dresses are the same style as the bride. As time evolves this has changed. For example, at a Hawaiian beach wedding, the bridesmaids could wear a knee-length dresses while the groomsmen wear board shorts with a plain t-shirt on top. The colors should still coordinate with the theme.
Guests
The guests should wear attire to match the theme of the wedding. Normally, the dress code for the celebration is mentioned in the invitation. If you are unsure, ask the bride about appropriate dress. Do not wear black for this celebration. Black dresses are suitable for funerals, not weddings. And ladies, it's frowned upon to wear a white dress. You do not want to compete with the bride!
