Bridal garters are a great complement to wedding dresses and the lingerie that you choose for your special day. They are small and traditional and as time passes are becoming less popular, so what is a bridal garter and why would you choose one for your wedding?
A garter is actually an item of lingerie, a band used to hold up silk stockings. Many years ago stockings did not have incorporated elastics like today, so ladies used to hold them in place with a garter around their leg.
So what have they got to do with weddings?
Traditionally the groomsman had to go into his friend's bedroom on the evening of the wedding 'to check' that the groom had consummated the marriage. He needed something of the bride's that proved that he had gone in to check and all was well. A garter, being small and clearly associated to the bride, was a favorite item to act as 'proof.'
As time passed this obviously would have seemed increasingly creepy and the tradition evolved into the groom throwing his bride's garter into the arms of the waiting single men at the wedding. It had become accepted as lucky to catch the garter and mean that you would be the next to marry! It's a male version of the bouquet toss if you will.
With modern tastes changing and beach weddings and the like becoming more popular the humble garter is fast being forgotten, but if you enjoy being part of a 600 or so year old tradition then you could choose one and make the single men at your wedding very happy .
If you choose a garter though make sure that the color matches your wedding dress, just as you would with any wedding lingerie. For instance, if your dress is ivory color and your bridesmaids are wearing apricot then sometimes you could choose a garter made of ivory and apricot lace.
On the other hand you may choose a blue lace garter to fit in with the tradition of having 'something blue.' The blue item denotes fidelity, meaning that you will stay true to the groom. So a garter can also have quite a nice romantic value for your wedding day too.
Finally you could have a themed garter, so if your wedding has a fall theme you could possibly have a garter with an oak leaf detail to make you seem truly unnal.
Also be aware that although a garter is a nice complement to your wedding dress, if you're wearing a slip or sheath dress the garter could spoil its line. In this case you would probably be going for a simple band rather than something too lacy.
So we can see that a bridal garter could be the perfect complement to your wedding dress and will make you one of the countless brides through the ages who have enjoyed being a part of this small, but romantic tradition.
