One of the earliest decisions to be made during wedding planning is on the style of your wedding. One factor in this is whether religion will play a part in your ceremony or wherever you will choose to go with a civil route. Once you have decided upon the kind of wedding ceremony that you would ideally like to have, your next task is to find a person to marry you. As with any wedding vendor the first place to start your search is by asking people you know. Have any of your family or friends recently been married? If so, ask them for recommendations. If you have or know a wedding consultant it may be a good idea to ask them to point you in the direction of a suitable candidate for your ceremony. Remember, they will probably attend several events a year, so they will have a good idea of what makes a good officiant and will no doubt remember anyone that stand out from the crowd.
Once you have a shortlist of candidates for the job, you will want to interview each and every one of them. They will more than likely want to interview you too. You will need to ascertain whether they are available on your chosen date, if there are any special rules or traditions you should follow at your ceremony and get an idea on what they plan to say. While many people will almost always tailor their words to your individual circumstances, you will still need an idea of what they are capable of. Why not ask if you can see what they wrote for a speech at a previous wedding?
You may want to make your wedding day as personal and unique to you as possible. It is important to establish whether the person you choose to marry you will allow you to do this. One common way that couples try to make their day unique is by writing personalized vows. You will probably find that most civil officiants are open to this, whereas some religious ones, particularly those that are stricter, may not be. If this is the case for you, you will absolutely need to make a decision based on what is most important to you, saying your own vows to each other, or getting married under the terms of your religion.
When you meet with any candidate for the job you will also want to ask them questions about the wedding venue. You should find out when the rehearsal will be, whether they will allow your photographer and / or videographer to be present during the proceedings and whether you must adhere to a particular dress code.
An outstanding officiant will be there for you through the time in which you are planning the wedding and shortly after the event. They should be able to help guide you through any tough patches and any strains in your relationship. On top of this they should try to resolve any issue that either family has with the marriage. They are more than just an emcee for your ceremony; they are there to help guide you through engagement into married life.
