A wedding planning checklist will become your new best friend as you progress through your wedding planning. It will be able to tell you when you need to do something and what you need to do, as well as giving you an overview of where you are at with your wedding preparations.

There are many free checklists available to download from the internet and most bridal magazines will carry one in some form or another in each issue. The trouble with these wedding planning checklists is that they usually conform to a generic time frame and wedding preparations, which may not suit everyone. Each wedding is different and you may have more or less tasks to complete before the big day.

Designing your own checklist however, is easy and you can use a free version to help you plan your own wedding and produce your own wedding planning checklist quickly and easily. All you need is a spreadsheet or word processing program on your computer and a little bit of time to put it together. A calendar would be handy too!

Start by typing in the number of months you have until your wedding day. This maybe 18, 12, 9 etc then use the generic checklist to help you type in which tasks need to be completed at the start of your wedding planning. These will usually be things like booking the ceremony, booking the reception venue and deciding on your wedding style and / or theme.

If the timeframe to your wedding day is shorter than that on the generic list then you will need to add in tasks from the next section as well. This is the tricky part as you will need to calculate when each task should be done to ensure you fit everything in to your desired wedding planning time frame. Use your calendar as well to make sure you have enough time available to complete all the tasks needed – other commitments may dictate how much you can achieve in any given time frame.

Also be careful about ordering or booking things too early or too late. For instance, ordering your wedding cake at the start of the wedding planning could be a bad idea as it may not beitable by the time the wedding day arrives, likewise ordering your wedding favors one week before could see them after after the wedding day! If you are in any doubt as to how much time you will need to allow for any given task, then ring some vendors or suppliers and ask their advice first.

Designing your own checklist can also allow you to delegate some tasks to other people and be able to keep track of who is doing what and when. For instance, you can delegate the booking of the wedding transportation to your groom and ask your chief bridesmaid to pick up your wedding cake for you or table linens etc. Do not forget to add in potential dates for your bridal shower and bachelorette parties either.

Once you have finished and are happy with the way the checklist looks and works, then save a copy on your computer and print out several to give to other people and one for yourself for your planning notebook. It can also be a good idea to keep a copy pinned up next to your calendar for quick reference should need it. Having a copy on your computer also means you can easily edit it should you need to add things in or move something around.
