The roulette wheel is spinning. The champagne flows steadily as you continuously collect your winnings. With each raised bet, you lose a little more of your inhibitions. Turning to the woman you only know as Lucky Charm, you tell her that, if you win this next spin that you two are getting hitched. She smiles, all giggles and nods. The wheel spins, the marble settlers and the crowd roars, as your new fiance wraps her slender arms around your waist to celebrate your new-found wealth.
At this point, you're either panicking about how your parents reaction to marrying a woman you knew for five hours or you're trying to sneak out the back door after collecting your wins and hope Lucky is too smashed to remember your name.
There are many reasons to elope; a roulette may not be the best one. Eloping used to mean stealing away to Las Vegas in the dark of night, to have your nuptials performed by a priest dressed like Elvis. Today people choose to elope to minimize the stress associated with managing a large production a wedding can be sometimes. (Personally, the large production is my favorite part.) However, there is nothing wrong with building an intimate wedding just for you and your partner, which may include your closest friends and family.
You can imagine sitting in first class – while your planner, parents and best friends are sitting in coach – imagining your week at the resort. You will spend a night with your best friends, celebrating your last night being single. After a night of partying, you will stand with your spouse to be by the waterfall and recite your vows as water crackles over the brook in the garden. Afterwards, you will have a small intimate dinner with your friends and family, lit by candlelight, underneath the stars. Then, pack up the family; they have a flight to catch and you have a vacation to spend with your brand-spanking-new spouse.
What about the 50+ people who are going to miss out? Record the funeral on DVD, maybe add a little of your vacation footage. When you return home, invite friends and family over for an informal party and watch the video over finger foods and drinks.
A wedding, while it is a statement to the world of your love, is mostly for you and your spouse. If you do not want the large production, or even are just trying to cut back on the budget, do not be accused of eloping. Just remember, follow your heart … and your budget.
