In part 1 of this article I touched on the preparation required in order to emcee a wedding. This part will cover what you need to do on the big day to ensure that the reception runs smoothly. After all, this is your primary role as a wedding emcee.
The guests are arriving at the reception. Where to from here?
The first thing to remember is be enthusiastic! If you are a ball of nerves, your emotions will project onto the audience, bringing the whole mood down. Keep it light, and smile.
Now onto the reception itself. There is a fairly standard order to how the reception progresses. The list below will give you an indication of what you will be doing for the next few hours. I hope you have your checklist and cue cards with you and have rehearsed.
1. Introduce yourself to the wedding guests. They need to know who you are and why you're here.
2. Make an announcement indicating how the reception will proceed , remember to note the smoking policy, any smoking areas, as well as the location of the amenities, etc ..
3. Announce the wedding party when they arrive . Usually the order is:
– The parents of the bride.
– The parents of the groom.
– The groomsmen and bridesmaids (either announced together or separately)
– And, without further ado, the new 'Mr and Mrs -'
4. Announce any toasts after the meal, if one is being served.
5. Announce the speeches next.
6. Then comes the bride and groom's first dance .
7. Later, announce the cake cutting , bouquet and garter toss.
8. Announce the bride and groom leaving .
9. Signal the end to festivals , and farewell all the guests.
Phew, you've finished. See? Not hard at all.
Remember, the bride and groom asked you to emcee their wedding because they respect you, and probably wanted a personal touch to the event. Enjoy the event yourself and it will go along fast and smoothly. They key to enjoying yourself is to be prepared.
