Navigation Frustrations – Find Your "Local" Wedding GPS!

This week I had to "pleasure" of driving around Dallas, TX metropolis. I say that with a bit of chagrin. For me, driving in Texas continues to prove to be a gigantic headache and a huge challenge. The roads are more confusing than anywhere else in or out of the country. I've driven in Europe, Canada, and in various states around the US, but I've never felt more hopeless and as incompetent a driver, missing roads, street signs, and turns, as I do when I drive in Texas.

While this was my first time to Dallas, I had similar experiences in San Antonio on previous trips. And Google maps were not any more helpful. With directions in front of me, I missed turns, drve 3 miles out of the way just to turn around and come back to where I started … ever abandoning the idea of going anywhere but my hotel and work. Being from Michigan, I really wanted to enjoy the experience and explore someplace I have not been, but the idea of going through it is more daunting than exciting … and I'm one who loves challenges !!

On my final trip back to Dallas, I ran into a local who laughed at my frustration. Having returned from my home area, he had similar frustrations. He felt we had too many highways to get lost on, while in Dallas, they only have 4 main highways, and mastering these would get me anywhere I want, unlike our multitude of highway options. So … after talking with him a bit more about the layout, I built the confidence to venture out and drove with confidence and pleasure! I explored the downtown area, had lunch a quaint little café and even stumbled upon a performance of kid at a Hare Krishna temple.

What I realized is this maze of roads is similar to planning your wedding. There are many avenues, twists, turns, and roads to follow … many of which lead to the same place. But with so many options, it's not hard to get side tracked and miss the path you meant to take. You may feel exactly as I did driving down the unknown roads to their final destination, hopeless and fearful to take the right path to your "perfect" wedding. You have the ideas, and may even know exactly what they want, but have an impossible time trying to translate your imagination into reality. Even with a map, checklists, planning guide books and magazines to get you there, the journey can still be overwhelming to the point you want to throw in the towel and forget it all together.

With the help of a "local", planning can become an enjoyable instead of daunting process. Mastering the main highways, ensures you get to your final destination (after the wedding hopefully somewhere tropical J) with ease.

Your Couture Bride Assignment:

1. Relax. Do not let yourself get too hurt up about planning your wedding. If you feel frustrated or overwhelmed, reach out for help. Believe me, your fiancé, family and friends will LOVE you for not taking it all on yourself.

2. Research. Investigate your options. What resources are available to you? Working with a planner might be the best option for you? Do you want to only do the things you love and leave the foot work to someone else to realize you vision clearly? Make sure you have a team that wants to support your vision and is not pushing their own agenda. Get to know your vendor, via their website, interviews, and blog. A blog is a fantastic way to get to know your vendors better. Their style and personality will come across much more in their blog than on their website.

3. Renew. Fall in love with planning all over again. Hiring the best sellers and planner will revive your sense of excitement for your wedding. The "locals" will guide you through the journey with the ease of a gps wedding navigator.
