This is a huge question and depends a lot on where you are, what type of wedding you want, your budget and as many other things as there are brides.
Usually you will get a good sense of whatever relationship is going to be what you want the first time you talk with her. Does she take the time to listen to you or does she just send you back to her website?
Since I work on Maui as a wedding planner, I'm going to stick with what I know best. Planning weddings on Maui. And Maui weddings run the gamut. From a simple wedding on the beach to a larger event with catering, music, tents, etc. But whichever yours is, it's important to you.
But I would say that the one most important thing is you confidence in your planner. You need to have a good relationship. She needs to listen to you and you need to listen to her. She has the experience, but it's your wedding. Both need to be respected.
Even if she has a huge client list, when you're considering your wedding that should be the only thing on her mind. She should be capable of understanding your dreams and visions and making those her own for your event.
She should not be dictating to you, but you need to recognize and respect her expertise. Your interactions should be pleasant and exciting. Her attitude will tell you tons about whether or not she really enjoys what she's doing. And, boy, is that important!
More later.
