So there are a few questions that linger around this topic. Is cash a reasonable gift to give a wedding couple? Can I expect cash gifts at my wedding? How much money can I expect to receive as gifts? Is it rude to ask for cash gifts at our wedding? All of these are very valid questions and sometimes can be totally embarrassing to ask. It's really going to depend on what is customary amongst your family, friends and community.
It used to be that people would give gifts to a newly wedded couple to help them set up for their new life together in their new home. Traditionally, the father of the bride has always been responsible for most, if not all of the expense of the wedding day. Which meant that the newly wedded couple did not have the expense of the wedding to try and re cooperate. And also the newly weds traditionally lived apart prior to their big day.
Now a lot of couples pay for the wedding themselves and their parents also chip in to help share the costs, and there are more couples that already have themselves established. So in reality it is fair that the couple hope for cash gifts to help pay for the wedding or help pay for the loan to have the wedding. There are lots of people who do think paying cash is tacky but they have to realize that it is not their wedding and if they have not paid for the wedding then they may need to be told that costs do need to be re cooperated and maybe they could open their wallet to help so then you would not have to ask.
So how do you ask for cash gifts at your wedding? Well a lot of people ask members of the bridal party or their immediate family what kind of gifts the wedding couple would like or cash in lieu of gifts. So make sure you let these people know. This is going to be the easiest and least embarrassing way to ask for cash gifts.
Honestly, if you do not expect anything, then you'll be quietly happy. If your expecting money to help pay the bills then you are never going to have enough and you will end up worrying all night about paying the bills rather than enjoying what is supposed to be the happiest night of your life.
