The decorations are one of the things that really bring a wedding reception to life. With the right décor, you can transform a ho-hum space into something really spectacular. The larger the venue, though, the more decorations you will need to fill the space and make it look great. This can pose a problem when working with a limited budget, but there are some ways to get a lot of look for less money.
The first step is to evaluate the space you have selected for your reception. Is it going to be indoors or outdoors? Does it have natural light and a terrific view, or does the room lack windows (which is common with hotel ballrooms)? Look up: is the ceiling attractive, or is it an eyesore, with exposed ductwork? Once you have made a list of the pluses and minuses of the venue, you will be ready to be choosing decorations.
The next step is to set the theme of your wedding. Are you having an elegant affair, with the men in black tie and the bride in a traditional white dress with pearl bridal jewelry? Then your reception will look very different from that of the bride who is wearing a sexy sheath dress and crystal chandelier earrings for bridal jewelry. It is important that the design of the room matches the style of the bride.
From there, it is a matter of choosing décor to highlight the best features of the room, while showcasing your theme, and sticking to your budget. This can be a tall order when the space is large. The good news is that there are elements that work well to fill up a big room without spending a lot.
One of your best friends will be potted trees. They are ideal for decorating in a large or wide open area. Potted trees can be rented, and cost a fraction of large floral arrangements. Use them around the perimeter of the room to make the space feel more intimate. Or place them in blank corners to bring interest to a neglected part of the room. Potted trees are also good for camouflaging any unattractive elements in the reception venue. You can choose trees that play up your theme, such as palm trees for a tropical wedding. A couple of strands of tiny white lights will make the trees even more festive.
Another great space-filler is fabric. You would be amazed how a piece of cloth can totally change the look of the room. Fabric does not have to be expensive; search for large remnants that are in your wedding colors or a neutral like ivory. Panels of fabric can be draped to divide up a large open room into a section for the ceremony and a separate section for the reception. Cloth drapes also work well to quickly bring a lot of color into a drab space.
A unique way to decorate a large space is to rent interesting props from a theater supply company. You could use decorative urns on pedestals, statues, or even interesting sculptures. Pieces like those will give your room a focal point, and will give your guests something to talk about. The rentals may not be as inexpensive as you would like, but they are sure to cost less than floral arrangements of a comparable size.
Keep in mind when decorating a large space that it is all about scale. Dainty pieces will disappear in a large venue, so be sure to match the size of your decorations to the size of your space. With a little creativity, you will find it possible to transform a large reception site into the place of your dreams without spending a fortune.
