When it comes to who pays for your wedding if you are lucky there may be a few options for you to choose. Here is some advice on spreading the wedding budget between yourselves and your parents.
Having the soon to be wed couple and each set of parents contribute to the cost of the wedding has its benefits. The first obvious benefit is that the amount of money you have to spend will be reduced, as there will be others to help out. Secondly, with your parents making a financial investment they will want to have some input in your wedding. You may find that they will be on hand to help with the wedding planning including helping find a venue, choose dresses, and negotiate with vendors. However, this can be something of a double-edged sword. With your parents paying for part of your wedding they may want to change the wedding away from your idea of a perfect wedding towards their idea. If this is the case, remember that it is your wedding and while you should be receptive to their ideas you should retain overall creative control.
So how do you go about asking your parents to pay for part of your wedding? You may be lucky and they may just volunteer. However, for those of you who parents do not volunteer here is what to do.
Once you have decided what kind of wedding you want, start planning early. Get as many quotes together as you can from venues, vendors, florists, etc. This will allow you to go to your parents more informed. If you are able to give them a good idea of where and how there money will be sent they will probably be much more receptive to handing it over than if they thought there money was just going to be thrown away carelessly.
It is also important to let them know that you will want them involved in other aspects the wedding planning. This will let them know that you are not just after some money so you can disappear and plan your wedding without them. If they feel like they are a part of the event they are more likely to make the financial investment. Again pre-planning is needed here. Draw up a list of tasks that your parents can do that will not require them to empty their wallets before you ask for money. Take your budget, vendor quotes and to do list all with you when you meet with your parents.
Whatever you do, do not try to forgive your parents in to helping out financially. You may be unaware of any financial difficulties that they are under, so if for some reason they can not donate as much as you had hoped, you will just have to work with what you have. There are after all several ways that you can cut your costs with a little time and effort, instead of cash, spent.
