Taffeta Tastic – The Wonder Fabric for Brides on a Budget

[ad_1]

The wealthy, budget-less bride's rule is coming to an end. For too long, have these brides had the sole privilege of choice over the mesmerizing effect that is created by shot fabrics. But times are changing! Brides on a tight budget have a whole world of choice open to them now. This is thanks to the fairy godmother-like efforts of various textile designers. The availability of beautiful shot taffetas and iridescent chiffons to match is much, much wider than even just a season ago. How wonderful is that!

The beautiful effect that it created when two different colors are woven together creates something very dynamic about a dress. The most basic of cut dresses looks like red carpet material when created in a shot fabric. Do not get me wrong – I love silks. They have their own personality. But the new affordable taffetas in some amazing bridal colors are fantastic to work with when creating a dress with drama and attitude. Pleated, pinched, ruched, embellished or not they look great. They are available in every weight that a good dress designer could desire. Thus, allowing my design studio and I, a much wider choice when designing a budget wedding dress.

Yes, but it is not the traditional silk and it does not feel quite the same and blah, blah … I hear you say. True, it is not silk and it is different. But would I be a good dress designer if I could not use 'different' to the bride's best advantage? Different is good. Let us move on with the times. As designers, we can some time get set in our ways. Brides are changing and so should we.

Think about it. A large percentage of brides have children today. They have other demands on their time and resources. Not to mention their money. They can not spend as much as they would like on the wedding and bridesmaids dresses . These are brides who need to pick their small children up and carry them during the reception as they may be getting married but they are not having a holiday from being a parent. Many a bride with small children is worried about their child being upset due to the change of routine on the day of the wedding. They worry that their dress will mark will try to pacify their child. These fabrics are a perfect solution. I personally avoid an acetate fabric if the bride has small children due its water marking properties.

But think of them opportunity we have! We can create the dramatic, fairytale or sophisticated using most of these fabrics at a more reasonable price. Some simply cut bridesmaids dresses in an amazing shot taffeta will complete the picture. For example, a black and lime green shot together which makes this fantastic olivey green color is a real winner.

So far we have not even mentioned the disturbed and crushed taffetas. The texturing of these newer fabrics helps to show off their beautiful and amazing qualities. This gives designers the opportunity to provide a contrast with the flat or uncrushed version of the same fabric as an accent detail or a contrasting bodice or skirt. These seem the ideal fabrics to add to a collection for destination weddings. The biggest worry when marrying abroad is your garment creasing while traveling. Synthetic taffetas are however, quite resilient to transport and the creases usually drop out in a day or two. If they are not acetate then some steam will be a possibility for any particularly stubborn creases. Of course, the safest is a crushed fabric. After all, nobody would notice if it were creased.

These fabrics give modern designers a new set of tools for our tool-kit so let us use them to the full. It will not be right for every single bride that walks into your design studio but for some brides it will be perfect. For these brides we can unleash the wonders of the new taffetas.
