For straight couples, wedding day style is pretty tried and tested. But for same sex couples, the rules are not so fixed. One of you might want to rock a contemporary blue suit, while the other would prefer to go black tie, and if you’re both wearing wedding dresses, there are endless shapes, styles and types of gowns to contrast (or clash) your looks. Do you shop together or leave your looks as a surprise for the big day? To help you wade through all the potential dress code dilemmas ahead of your big day, we’ve consulted some professionals, and looked to super stylish newlyweds to round up tips and inspiration for same sex wedding style.
Ideas for Styling Same Sex Couples
1. A Colour in Common
If you and your other half wear entirely personalised looks on your wedding day, you could always style in a common colour through elements of your ensembles. These pairing pinks with burgundy touches are beyond chic!
2. Pairing Pastels
Wearing different colours from the same family is an easy way to create an ultra styled look, without too much effort. Lilac and pink is always going to be a winning combo for us!
3. Similar Shape, Different Colours
Blush and ivory, black and white, mixed pastels or jewel tones, if you love the uniformity of the same style or shape of dress, you can always make your look your own with different colours. We love Natalie and Nicole’s matching mini dresses for an effortless, laid back vibe.
4. Twinning Can Be Winning
While it can seem like the easiest option for suits, twinning is actually really tricky. You want to look like spouses, not siblings! If you decide to go matchy matchy, go all in with a carefully chosen suit, well-styled accessories, and on-point grooming.
5. Boho Vibes
Love the idea of boho wedding style? Even if you and your other half create entirely different ensembles, setting the vibe means your accessories will tie together in a way that’s effortlessly eclectic. This pair are beyond cool!
6. Same Suit, Different Colours
Anderson and James always make us smile! Lots of grooms choose to wear the same suit for their wedding, but change up the look with different shades. Modern tailors offer a broader selection than ever before, so while navy and grey are popular, you could also opt for brighter or bolder hues of blue, pink, red or green.
7. Tie it Into Your Theme
Aisling and Jackie wore entirely different dresses, but they both had the same dreamy, romantic feel. A couple with a clear vision for their wedding day, will more instinctively coordinate with the aesthetic of their wedding.
8. His and His Check
Match your checks but contrast your colours, for a sharp same sex wedding suit look. The bare ankles and white trainers on these two get bonus points!
9. Don’t Conform… or Do
Want to rock a classic white dress? Want to wear some sharp tailoring, along with flowers, makeup and a mani? Pick and choose from gender norms to create your own custom look you feel 100% comfortable in.
10. Rock a Jumpsuit
We are always here for a bridal jumpsuit moment, if dresses really aren’t your bag, they make a stylish alternative, especially if you still want a quintessentially ‘bridal’ feel to your look.
11. Mix Up Your Accessories
If you and your other half love the idea of wearing the same suit – try contrasting your look with accessories, tie vs dickie bow, contrasting pocket squares, or different button holes. Alan and Peter are showing us how it’s done!
12. No White Necessary
Don’t like the idea of a big white wedding dress? No worries, you can both opt for colour and still look entirely wedding-ready! This couple are all kinds of style goals.
13. Two in Tuxedos
Tuxedos are always a winner – instantly sharp, universally stylish, and completely timeless. Make like these grooms and do a tie, bow-tie combination to contrast your looks.
14. You Do You
How stunning are these brides? The best thing you can do to look good on your wedding day is to feel confident and smile. If both of your wear an outfit you love, and feel amazing in, you’ll pair together beautifully, no matter what!
15. Same Dress Code, Different Looks
Choose a specific dress code, like black tie, and then contrast your looks with different blazers and bow ties. You still have a cohesive look, without twinning! Bomo and Jerome were some seriously suave grooms!
16. Low Backs and Flower Crowns
A lesson in rocking similar shaped gowns without being too matchy, these brides’ backless gowns and flower crowns are cool, effortless and bohemian.
17. Statement Blazers
We love how these grooms each made their statement with their blazers and accessories against an otherwise simple all-black look.
18. Modern Mis-match
Deciding with your other half to go for contemporary dresses is another way to ensure similar styles and silhouettes on the big day.
19. Wear the Trousers
These brides are rocking some serious ‘something blue’ style here, and proof that both of you can sport pant suit looks in completely different ways.
20. Rustic, Two Ways
These brides both wore romantic looks for their rustic wedding, but each wore something that reflected their own signature style.
21. Add Some Drama
Well this is just breathtaking. Capes are a big deal this year in bridal fashion, and there’s no reason why grooms can’t take on the trend too. Likewise, a veil, statement head piece or some dramatic jewellery is a great way to shake up traditional wedding attire.
22. Embrace Your Every Day Style
This tip goes for all couples! Don’t be afraid to feature your every day style in your wedding day look, you want to feel like yourself, not like you’re playing dress-up!
23. Princess-level Whimsy
If ultra-feminine, princess wedding style is your jam, lean in!
24. Matching Textures
These two tuxes might look different, but are actually the same suit. You can mix textures, patterns or brocades for a subtle matching look.
25. All Kinds of Gorgeous
Suit or dresses? Whichever you prefer, this pair are serving us two individual but equally fabulous wedding day looks.
26. Striking the Silhouette
A common fear among same sex brides is that one will have a full ballgown and the other will have something more understated or casual. Coordinating on your silhouette, whatever dress you choose, will help you tie in together beautifully.
27. All Out Personality
Unabashedly themselves, I love how these two had fun with their looks and made wedding day style their own.
28. Shirt Game
These grooms put their own stamp on their looks with signature shirts and blazers. We don’t know which look we’re here for more, the suave tie pin or the fun retro ruffles?
29. Luxe Life
Twice the luxury! These brides are show-stoppingly gorgeous in next-level couture gowns.
30. Locking Lips
Meegan and Harriet wore personalised outfits for their wedding, but they did coordinate on their makeup, creating a cool, cohesive look for their wedding day photo ops!
31. Throw Out the Rulebook
There’s no law that says you need to opt for formalwear on your wedding day. If you and your other half love to make a statement, why not construct a dress code of your own, or assemble some avant-garde looks together? Les and Przem are the kings of vibrant wedding style.
Shopping and Styling Tips For Same Sex Wedding Style
- Lots of couples don’t want to see eachother’s looks before the big day – if that’s you and your other half, recruit a stylish friend to go shopping with both of you to ensure your looks tie together nicely.
- If you’re both wearing dresses or suits, consider shopping in the same boutique or with the same tailor, that way they can style or make coordinating outfits with both of your individual looks and styles in mind.
- If one of you has your outfit first, you can send a picture to the boutique your other half is shopping in so they can find something to coordinate.
- Set a vibe or loose dress code early on so you both have the same expectations of your wedding day style. It’s fine for one of you to go offbeat and the other to be classic, but it is important to have a conversation in advance so you’re both comfortable on the day and neither of you feels over or underdressed. You want to feel like you’re both dressing for the same party!
- It’s so important to feel comfortable and like yourself on your wedding day – don’t feel pressured to wear something that isn’t ‘you’.
- There are lots of subtle ways to help two looks appear cohesive without being entirely matchy. While some couples are eager to match, and do it well, generally it’s more chic to wear your own personalised look that simply ties in with your other half. As we said, you want to look like spouses, not siblings!
- Dresses in particular work best together if there is one uniform element in both, the style, fabric, texture, shade of fabric, embellishment or length.
- In tailoring, different blazers, waistcoats, and accessories can be used to change up the same suit.
- Be careful with wearing different suits or dresses of similar, but not identical colours – if in doubt ask a friend to check that they tonally work together. Two grey suits from different tailors for example, might look off next to each other. Likewise for dresses, if one of you chooses a stark white and the other’s dress is cream, it could make the latter appear dull.
- Most boutique staff and tailors are super helpful, so approachable and will go above and beyond to assist you to create your perfect wedding look. If you do encounter any judgement or ill-feeling, don’t be afraid to leave, and make a complaint. Everyone, regardless of their gender or sexual orientation should be able to shop freely for dresses or suits.
- Our list of recommended tailors and wedding dress boutiques are great places to start your search!
