North Clear Creek Falls
North Clear Creek Falls is believed to be the most photographed waterfall in Colorado. And that's saying a lot because it's located in a part of the state that's far away from any major city. The largest town that's in the general area is Gunnison. If you're coming from Gunnison, you'll pass through Lake City, which is the closest small town to North Clear Creek Falls.
From Lake City, you'll follow Hwy. 149 south until you reach the turn-off for the falls. Once at the parking area, it's only a short walk to this impressive Colorado waterfall. It drops a little over 100 feet into the canyon, and there's a viewing area from which you can get a good look at it. Or if you want, there's a little trail you can follow that goes along the top of the canyon where you can get different views of the falls. Just do not get too close to the edge.
Bridal Veil Falls
Of the many waterfalls in Colorado, Bridal Veil Falls is definitely a must-see if you're a waterfall fan. And this one is another one that's located in a remote part of the state. Bridal Veil Falls is near the ski town of Telluride. But once you see the falls, I think you'll agree that it was worth going the distance.
Bridal Veil Falls has a long drop of over 300 feet and is the tallest of all the known waterfalls in Colorado. To see it, drive east out of Telluride on Colorado Avenue. This road will take you the short distance to the falls but the catch is that you need a high clearance vehicle. The road turns to dirt and gets very bumpy and rocky. So if you do not have a high clearance vehicle, just park on the side of the road and hike the rest of the way to the falls.
Fish Creek Falls
Of the top three Colorado waterfalls that I'm telling you about, Fish Creek Falls is the easiest one to get to, in terms of driving. It's located near Steamboat Springs, and even though that's considered to be a little bit off the beaten path, it's still easier to get to than North Clear Creek Falls, or Bridal Veil Falls. And you have the ease of driving on a paved road all the way to the parking area.
Fish Creek Falls is just a few short miles outside of Steamboat Springs. At the parking lot, you do have to pay a fee. Once you do that, you should drive to the upper lot first to see if there are any spots left. (That'll get you closer to the trailhead.) From the upper parking lot, it's just a short walk downhill to Fish Creek Falls. At the bottom, you'll cross a bridge from which you have a wonderful view of the falls.
As a side note, the best time to see these waterfalls, (or any other Colorado waterfalls), is usually in June, or even earlier, depending on snow levels. That's because the water levels are greater, so the waterfalls will be more impressive.
