Plymouth is a great place to get married, the city is steeped in maritime history being the setting off point for the pilgrims to America and also for Francis Drake in the defeat of the Spanish Armarda. It also boasts several great wedding venues and as wedding photographers covering this region, we thought that we’d share our opinions on four of the best!
Boringdon Hall is situated just outside of Plymouth in south west Devon. The hall of itself is a perfect example of a 16th century manor house, it was virtually destroyed in 1989 by a fire and has since been rebuilt into one of the most prestigious wedding and conference venues in the south west of England with a fantastic location very close to the city of Plymouth. Boringdon Hall was even mentioned in the Domesday book and the name ‘Boringdon’ comes from the Saxon interpretation of “enchanted place on the hill”. The hall belonged to Saint Peter of Plympton until the national dissolution of the monasteries by King Henry VII in 1539. Despite the ravages of the fire and its colourful past, Boringdon Hall is now one of the leading wedding venues in the south west and still remains one of the best examples of the 16th century manor house in the UK.
Having a dedicated wedding coordinator is just one of the small benefits of getting married at Boringdon Hall. The location is perfect being very close to the naval town of Plymouth, yet the hall itself retains many characteristics of countryside manor house. In fact to call Boringdon Hall a manor house is an understatement, it is much bigger and grander than any standard manor house that you would typically find in in the UK. Boringdon Hall offers several different locations within the venue itself and its grounds for a magnificent wedding ceremony, this includes a large permanent marquee within the grounds for larger weddings and corporate events. There is also an extensive range of accommodation available for your wedding guests including twin rooms, family rooms, a room with a four poster bed and an executive suite better or competitively priced and finished a the highest standards. There is an oak beamed gallery restaurant within the hall with an outstanding reputation for producing high quality food and is sourced from local suppliers using fresh fruit, meat, game and fish wherever possible.
As Boringdon Hall is much larger than the typical country manor house, the range of wedding photography available is outstanding. There is a wider area outside of the main entrance in which we can capture some outstanding photographs of the bride and groom with the Hall in the background. Inside the Hall itself, there are wide variety of rooms all with different characteristics, furnishings and antiques that allow us to capture the essence and history of the hall and incorporate the scenery within your wedding photographs. This could include a beautiful four poster bed room, fantastic gardens and scenic outlooks over the surrounding countryside.

The venue is fully licensed for weddings and civil partnerships. There is a selection of three different locations for the ceremony itself. The approach to the House is down a mile long tree lined drive with pasture either side. This was indeed the House made famous by Mother Hubbard – The Housekeeper – who wrote her rhymes for the children of the family. More recently it has featured in many films and on television.
