How About Tying the Knot on a Boat?
Consider having a boat wedding or getting married on a cruise ship. If you are couple given to romantic notions and you want to do something out of the ordinary, then you may want to exchange your vows on a yacht or other kind of boat. Or, you can plan a cruise reception on board after being wed in a beautiful nearby location on dry land, like in a secluded chapel or beneath a tropical waterfall or on a sandy beach.
Your Wedding Ceremony at Sea
Well, there are only a few sailing vessels or cruise lines that offer the services of their captain or another officiant to perform legal marriage ceremonies on the open seas. However, many couples can and do tie the knot at a shipboard ceremony while the ship is docked in a romantic port. The bride and groom are then free to follow up with a honeymoon holiday cruise and possible reception for a few ticketed guests.
You may also arrange for a symbolic marriage service on some cruises that has the romance of getting married by the Captain in the middle of the ocean but you’d still need to get legally married somewhere else. For this reason, a symbolic marriage package is often booked for couples that are renewing their vows, as they are already legally married.
If you live inland, don’t fret, as some larger lakes also have boats that offer marriage and reception packages. Or, you could plan a destination wedding that starts on a sailing ship from a coastal locale and ends up with your honeymoon on a distant island or in an exotic port.
Wedding Receptions on a Sailing Vessel
A few possible ways to have your wedding dinner on the water are to charter a private yacht (with a crew, of course) or to reserve an event package on a cruise ship or other larger vessel.
If you charter a yacht, then only you, your guests, your wedding professionals and the crew, have the entire ship to yourselves for a set number of hours. The professionals who take care of the details will generally be those that have a close relationship with the yacht company or owner.
On a cruise ship, if you are a ticketed passenger, you can reserve a small private reception depending on the number of your guests that have paid to sail with you on the cruise. These packages may include food, drinks, and live music for dancing.
Other types of boats may offer packages that give you and your guests exclusive use for a set time frame like on a yacht. Or, you may be able to rent a designated space or dining room for your reception on a larger boat, like a river boat, without having to contract for a multi-day cruise.
