The Evolution of Weddings

[ad_1]

Weddings in the United States have always been a ceremony reflecting a person’s culture and religion. In the past, one wedding did not vary much from the next, for tradition and customs were valued very highly and incorporated into each wedding. However, as time has progressed and culture has evolved, it is not uncommon to find that wedding ceremonies have transformed into a flexible and unique expression of the union of two people. Today, weddings reflect personality and spunk. Each wedding ceremony is different from the next, due to the venue, music, catering company, etc.

Though religion still heavily influences wedding ceremonies, the emphasis of individualism in American popular culture today paves the road for new dress designs, abstract ceremonies, and bizarre locations. The craziness that encompasses non-traditional weddings can be directly linked, first and foremost, to the venue or wedding hall. Destination weddings have become increasingly popular and gives the couple complete control of the environment and creativeness of their special day.

Traditional destination weddings are in cliche locations like Hawaii, the Bahamas, California, etc. Today, destination weddings are not limited to places with crystal blue waters, drinks with mini cocktail umbrellas, and over-priced souvenir shops. It seems as if trying to plan a wedding different and more creative than the norm, people have learned to settle for strange. Some not so common wedding locations today are held at baseball stadiums, aquariums, golf courses, and even zoos. Yes, that’s right; some people say their vows alongside a family of baboons.

With the whole anti-wedding ideology rapidly spreading throughout the United States in recent years, brides and grooms have not only found abstract venues, but inventive, new attire. The traditional long, white wedding gown and black tuxedo has been abandoned by many couples in attempt to be different and break free from the norm. Every year, there are more and more brides who like the idea of a colored wedding dress. Pale yellow, pink, and even gold are amongst the most popular, non-traditional dress colors. Of course many women still prefer long gowns, but shorter cut dresses have also been growing in popularity. Amongst the most popular non-traditional tuxedo colors for grooms include navy blue, sky blue, grey, beige, and brown. As for bridesmaids and groomsmen, their choice of attire has also become increasingly more casual and unique. It is very common to see bridesmaids wearing two pieces consisting of a skirt and nice top, instead of a traditional one piece dress.

As for non-traditional foods and catering services at wedding ceremonies and receptions, this aspect of weddings has definitely diminished in extravagance. Instead, many brides and grooms now aim for a more simplistic approach such as finger foods and sliders. Foods that were once served to wedding guests and considered inappropriate and childish are now “vintage”, cute, and creative. S’mores, hamburger sliders, cookies, and gummy bears are among few of the most popular non-traditional wedding foods.

No matter what major or minor changes have been made to traditional weddings, one thing remains the same. Couples still get married to sanctify their love for each other. Traditional and non-traditional weddings alike boast and celebrate a couple’s love.
