Three holiday celebrations in the Atlanta area offer glimpses into Christmases past. The Atlanta History Center’s two historic homes chronicle festivities in the mid-19th and early 20th centuries. The Callanwolde Mansion is also decorated for an early 20th century Christmas. Bulloch Hall in Roswell showcases pre-Civil War customs.
The Atlanta History Center owns two historic properties that are decorated for the holidays. The elegant 1928 Swan House is one of Atlanta’s most photographed landmarks. The mansion and gardens provide a look at the life of a wealthy family during the 1930s. The historic Tullie Smith House was built in the 1840s in the plantation-plain style. The house is typical of rural Georgia plantations in the pre-Civil War era. Both homes are decorated in period style and open for tours during the History Center’s annual holiday program, The Holiday Spirit, scheduled for December 15. At the Smith House visitors will see demonstrations of candle making, blacksmithing, and open hearth cooking. Costumed docents at the Swan House will explain the holiday celebrations of that era. The Atlanta History Center is located at 130 W. Paces Ferry Road. General admission is $16.50 for adults and $11 for ages 4-12.
The Callanwolde Mansion is the centerpiece of Callanwolde Fine Arts Center. The Gothic Tudor style mansion, once the home of a Coke heir, was built in 1920. It is beautifully decorated for the holidays as part of the annual Christmas at Callanwolde celebration, scheduled for December 7-18, 2012. Visitors may tour the home and enjoy seasonal concerts. Children may participate in activities such as Breakfast with Santa or a Teddy Bear Tea. The Callanwolde Artists Market offers a fine selection of holiday gifts. Callanwolde Fine Arts Center is located at 980 Briarcliff Road NE. Christmas at Callanwolde general admission tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, and $12 for ages 4-12.
Bulloch Hall, built in 1839, was the childhood home of Mittie Bulloch, the mother of President Theodore Roosevelt. The historic home is located in the northern suburb of Roswell. Bulloch Hall is beautifully decorated for the holidays from November 17-December 30. Some of the special Christmas events include High Teas, Christmas for Kids, and a production of A Christmas Carol. A highlight of the season is the December 20 reenactment of the wedding of Mittie Bulloch and Theodore Roosevelt Sr. Reservations are required for all special events. Bulloch Hall is also featured on a candlelight tour of Roswell’s historic homes on December 8. Tour tickets may be purchased at the door. Bulloch Hall is located at 180 Bulloch Avenue. The home is open for self-guided tours Monday-Saturday from 10am-4pm and Sundays from 1-4pm. Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for ages 6-18.
