Wedding On A Budget?

Here are some Tips to Save You Money on your Wedding.

Venue tips

If you choose to have your wedding on a Friday or Sunday, you will save money. If your wedding must be on a Saturday, choose an off-season date (January-April). Reduce costs by selecting a venue where the ceremony, photos and reception can take place in one location. Many hotels have a patio perfect for a wedding ceremony. One of my clients did just that, and it was a huge success.

Cake Tips

You could consider serving your wedding cake as the main dessert after dinner. Instead of paying for a dessert from your caterer, opt out and utilize the cake so that every guest can taste the gorgeous Wedding cake creation.

When choosing a cake as your main dessert, consider having a smaller cake (despite a smaller three tier) and substituting the remaining servings with sheet cakes, which are kept in the kitchen. Sheet cakes are the same as the main cake, except that they lack the decorations present on the wedding cake. This way all your guests will receive a delicious slice of wedding cake. Another of my clients did this, her mother made all the cakes with help from her friends.

Consider the design of the cake that you are choosing. Most wedding cakes are placed in front of the head table facing all of the guests. Choose a design that gives you the look you desire from the front with simpler, more economic design elements in the back; no one will even notice and you save a lot of money doing so!

Flower tips

Flowers are always lovely, but silk flowers are much easier. See where you can compromise. Eliminate the ceremony flowers altar. If your wedding takes place in a church, synagogue or outside in a beautiful garden, the space really does not need to be adorned with flowers.

Another suggestion, splurge on your bouquet and scrimp on your bride maids. They will not even notice, and you save money that you can spend on a small brides maid gifts. Go with flowers that are in season. Roses, hydrangeas & orchids (used sparingly!) A few with lots of babies breath looks lovely. Year-round; tulips and amaryllis from December to April, peonies in June, sunflowers and coneflowers midsummer, and colored local hydrangeas and dahlias in the fall.

Bad months for local flowers are September and November -there's not much available in bridal tones in Canada then, so orchids are your best bet during this time. The USA will have much more variety, depending on your location.

Photography tips

If you have your heart set on hiring a photographer, get only what you need. Decide on what's most important: shots of the ceremony, family portraits or candid pics of you and your new spouse, make this your focus.

Plan out your day and estimate how long you think this will take. If you decide it will take five hours, work with your photographer to come up with a five-hour package. If you are only interested in a DVD of high-resolution images, which you are free to print yourself, then hire a photographer who offers this as a stand-alone service. That will save you money. One client spent a lot of money on a photographer that she could have used elsewhere. This is a big money subject.

Ask if they offer a payment plan while the money can be paid in installments. Having to pay a lot of money all at once can really hit the budget hard, so having the option to pay over a period of time might be more economically friendly.

Invitations Tips

Put both your ceremony and reception information on the actual invitation, this eliminates the traditional Reception Card-saving you money and trees.

Or in this age of social media, do not mail out invitations. Instead use a Wedding Website (there are some nice free ones) or one can be created for you at very reasonable cost.

Communicate information on your blog. Instead of sending separate directions cards by mail, you can list specific routes to your ceremony and reception locations on your website. Google maps are a real blessing to out of town relatives. If you are having a weekend-long celebration, list all of the daily activities on your website instead of using extra cards with an invitation.

Pictures can also be shared on your blog, from everyone. Comments and best wishes can also be shared. The blog can be a simple 3 pg site or an elaborate Wedding celebration with social media like Facebook and Twitter to share with everyone, your friends and family around the world.
