Wedding receptions are generally the single most expensive aspect of a wedding and are the place the celebrations take place. Whilst many wedding venues vary in price and quality they all should provide some basic services and assist the bride and groom in facilitating all the formalities and traditions required. As the wedding reception is probably the largest party you are going to have in your life you too should expect certain things from your wedding reception venue.
Most reception spaces hire out there function rooms for a specified time. This time is usually between 5-6 hours. The more time you have on the night the less stressed and rushed the reception will be. Depending on the activities you have planned on the night you could also request extra time from the reception venues, however this may require you to pay an additional fee. Flexible wedding receptions will have a grace period or extra time for no extra cost.
The wedding reception will usually follow a format and it is the responsibility of the venue to make sure that all things run smoothly and on time. They usually work closely with the MC's and entertainers you hire to ensure that the perfect itinerary is in place for the night. It is extremely important for your MC to be in close communication with the venue so that everything goes to plan and the flow and order of the nights events are seamless.
The activities that are common at a wedding reception include, the meals, toasts and sentences, bridal waltz, cutting of the cake, bouquet tossing, garter tossing, dance sets and other entertainment if provided. The typical flow of these activities typically takes place in the following order;
1. Guests arrive for pre dinner drinks and canapés. This is where people mingle and begin to get in to the mood for the night's festivals.
2. Guests are located
3. Bride and Groom and the bridal party are introduced and separated
4. Prior to being separated the bride and groom can elect to cut the cake which is now more common to do at the beginning of the night.
5. Entrees' are served
6. Bridal Waltz
7. First Dance set
8. Toasts and Speeches can either proceed before or after the main meal.
9. Main meal is served
10. Dance set
11. Desserts served whilst the music is still going and the music will usually continue through the night from here on.
12. The cake is served either with dessert, as a dessert or with the tea and coffee at the end of the night.
13. Final dance before the tossing of the bouquet and garter.
14. Then all circle the bride and groom to say goodbyes
15. Bride and groom make their exit
16. Guests leave
Depending on the type of wedding you choose can determine the type of activities that take place. If you decided to opt for a cocktail reception the serving of the meals would not be required. Different couples and different cultures may add to the above list with regards to the activities as the may hire additional entertainment or have cultural traditions to perform on the night of the wedding reception. The most important thing to remember is to work closely with the wedding reception venue to make sure that all runs smoothly and is a success.
