Some locations will have all of the comforts of an indoor site, only outside, and other venues will really be blank slates. Give some thought to how much work you are willing to put into setting up for your wedding. For instance, if you are considering a scenic overlook on the top of a mountain, it could be perfect if your wedding is going to be fairly informal. Picture the bride wearing a very simple wedding dress with delicate handcrafted bridal jewelry, and probably some sensible footwear. However, if your vision of a dream wedding involves multiple tents, the bride in a silk ballgown and elaborate crystal handcrafted bridal jewelry, a twenty piece orchestra, and an eight foot wedding cake, you had better keep looking for a more accommodating site.
The easiest outdoor wedding sites will be those that are on the grounds of an inn or other venue accredited to hosting weddings. That way, all of the basic will be in place, such as electricity and hopefully some sort of respectable plumbing situation. It can also be easier for the caterer, especially if the location has an indoor kitchen that they can use. This is why many of the elite outdoor weddings will usually be held at inns or clubs, instead of in a wide open field or on a mountaintop.
Another thing to look for in an outdoor wedding venue is the structures that are in place. Do you picture yourself saying your vows under a flower draped gazebo or archway? It would be easier if you choose a site that already has one, rather than having to rent one for the day. Brides who like the idea of an outdoor wedding, but want elegance at the same time, should also look for pleasant details such as fountains, manicured gardens, and well-kept grounds.
Speaking of the grounds, it is important to find out if they can accommodate a tent large enough to fit all of your guests. The ground will need to be fairly flat for a tent to be practical, and you will not want to cram all of your guests into a tiny area, so make sure that you have a sense of what size tent you will need. If you do not want a tent, or the space can not accommodate one, then be sure that you will have a backup location in case of rain.
One other thing to look at in a wedding site is the aisle. You want to make sure that there is a suitable place for you to make your grand entrance. After all, on your wedding day, you want everything to be perfect!
