At last! The reign of the strapless dresses are drawing to a close and from my point of view, as a designer of wedding dresses, my scope has widened ten-fold. I feel that at last that I do not have to be designing with one hand tied behind my back. Freedom at last! Woe betides me if become like a doctor that prescribes the same new drug for everyone that walks through the door. The dark strapless cloud is lifting.
Sleeves can add such interest to the bodice of the dress and balance the skirt. What a relief for a country where most brides have hips that are bigger than their busts. The fact is that most brides tell that they hate their arms. So many brides have been marrying in dresses that are beautiful but add to their stress, as they continue to worry about their bingo-wings and back fat.
There is so much scope that sleeves offer the bride, the variable are almost infinite. Sleeves can be tailor to fit in with however much or little a bride wants to show. The length of sleeve affects the way the eye looks at the bust and this also applies to the way the camera sees the proportions. I have never had an ethical problem with lying to the camera. I have always felt that as a woman I am justified in using every dirty trick in the book. Needless to say that sleeves are part of my arsenal.
No need for the boring T-shirt length sleeve. Curve them, pleat them, gather them, dart them and do not forget to trim. Dramatic sleeves do not have to be long Romeo and Juliet sleeves. Try some short and flirty in an illusion fabric for a summer or spring wedding. Silk organza is great for the 'barely there' look. This is a great idea for the bride that wants a sleeve but a sleeve in the fabric of her dress is too heavy and makes the dress look matronly. However it is a good idea to consider adding some of this fabric Elsewhere on the dress to avoid the tacked on look.
I love chiffon or organza length sleeves on brides that are marrying in the late autumn or winter as they add the appearance of warmth but do not make the dress look heavy and weighed. This also helps if a bride is worried about being a pasty color at her wedding. Pairing up some s sleeves and a suitable bracelet just adds 'that little something' for when you put your flowers down and are talking to guests. The sparkle that the bracelet creates every now and then will make your reception photos just that little more interesting and give a good digital photographer something to work with when processing your photos.
A set of lovely delicate petal sleeves look great on flower girls under the age of about 8 years. They prevent the girls from looking too mature especially if you are using a dark color for their dresses. The reason the petal sleeve is a favorite of mine is it does not restrict the arm movement in anyway. Asking them to be themselves and doing what little girls do. There is nothing wrong than a bride spending some of her hard earned cash on a dress and then 20 minutes into the ceremony the child just wants to take it off. Just a quick note about children sleeves: if organza is used make sure that the armhole is bounded or finished is such away that it will not cause irritation on the child's under arm.
So while you are considering a short and flirty, a long and dramatic or neat and tailored sleeve, we may all see with relief that fashionable and stylish options have again broadened dramatically.
