Just some brief but really cruel tips of making the grooms man or best man speech. Most of the anxiety of giving the Best Man Speech at a wedding is actually about poor preparation but I hope that we will not be disappointed.
I have done the Best Man 'job' several times, and each time it got easier because I applied some key issues and ways of preparing.
There are just a few simple things that if done well they make all the difference.
1. Make it short – people do not want to listen to a long boring sermon but a quick, witty speech
2. Make sure you do your prep and get to know a lot about the groom and bride and where they met each other for example
3. It is really important that you do a fantastic job on what will be one of the most important days of the bride and grooms most memorable days but do not outshine them
4. Do not try and outdo or outshine the bride and groom
5. Keep it all nice and simple
6. With your compliments to the bride make them sincere but do not overdo them or you risk being seeming as patronizing or perhaps worse that you are jealous of the groom
7. If you decide to use humor then that is fantastic but there are always risks. Think of the day George W Bush said to a guy asking a question at a press conference 'Do you want me to take this seriously when you ask a question wearing shades' – the guy was blind!
8. Remember to thank the groom for asking you to be Best Man or Groomsman
9. It is good to tell some funny but exclusive stories about the groom and / or the bride but keep it clean
10. Very importantly you should say something about the bride and groom as a couple, to wish them well.
11. Try to keep the speech short and remember we are always here to help you
