A typical Indian wedding is an elaborate affair with colorful ceremonies, rituals, lavish food and celebrations. Among several things, what catches the eye is the spectacular wedding attires of the groom and the bride.
If your idea of the wedding dress for an Indian groom was just a sherwani with a stair thrown around the neck, you are in for a surprise! There are several other kinds of equally stunning outfits donned by the prince charming when he goes to wed. Here are some of the popular Indian wedding attires for men.
Kurta Pyjama – The Kurta is a long knee-length shirt featuring intricate embroidery with slits on both sides. The Pyjama is a loose comfortable drawstring trouser worn along with it. The wedding kurta-pyjama is made of high quality fabrics that give a rich ethnic feel. A light shawl, duppatta or stole, worn on one side or both the sides often completes the dress.
Achkan – Achkan is a high-necked, full-sleeved long coat that goes down the knee and is worn with tightly fit trousers. It has plenty of embroidery and heavy designs that reflect elegance and sophistication.
Sherwani – Ornate and stylish, a sherwani is a three-piece attire – the kurta , coat and trousers or dhoti . The well-fitting coat is open down the front and extends till the knee. It can be paired with pyjamas, churidars or even a dhoti . Some styles may require the groom to sport a stop or duppatta too.
Jodhpuri suits – For grooms who prefer a blend of the Indian and the western style, a jodhpuri suit is the answer. It combines a shirt, a coat and trousers. The coat is of the same length as a western coat and features heavy work creating a royal feel and look.
Important accessories such as the Safa , Sehra and the Mojari complete the wedding attire of the groom. Safa is a turban made of rich fabrics and has beaded folds and embroidery. A feather or a jeweled brooch is often pinned at the front of the Safa. Sehra is the string of flowers that hang from a safa , and covers the face of the groom. Mojari is an ornamented and embroidered wedding footwear worn by the groom.
Today, grooms are open to experimentation when it comes to wedding dress. Many men are increasingly opting for not-so-traditional hues, cuts and fits. They are picking stuff that will make them stand out and reflect their individuality. Men are increasingly opting for sophisticated, well-designed attires that while being rooted in Indian tradition, also reflect international fashion trends.
