The wedding veil is the most defining part of your wedding attire after the dress. It dates far back into history of weddings as it was worn for protection of the bride from evil spirits.
The brides of today have so many choices as to the type or style of veil they desire, but you must consider that it is an accessory and part of your overall look. For that reason it must coordinate with your dress.
Here are some things to remember when choosing your wedding veil.
Your Dress:
Of course, a most important thing to take into consideration is that the veil must compliment your dress.
For example, do you have a back detail to your dress that you wish to show off than you need to choose a veil that ends before the detail starts or is longer than the detail and sheer.
If the bust panel is embellished than the veil must not detract from that.
Then there is the style of the dress in general. If the dress is very detailed then a simple veil should be what you are looking for, whereas, if the dress is simple in style you can go with a more decorative veil.
These are certainly factors to be considered as you choose your veil: length, tiers, color, decoration and width.
Length:
If your dress has a high neck decoration, a very short veil such as a birdcage would be the right choice.
A veil at shoulder length is about 20 inches. This length would be best fitted to a dress that has a bust, lower back or waist detail and decoration.
The elbow length veil is roughly 25 inches and falls at around your elbow. Wear this with a lovely ball gown style because the veil ends and the fullness of the skirt begins.
A waist length veil is just a bit longer than the elbow length at 30 inches and is very complementary to a dress without a train.
A very popular length is the fingertip at about 36 inches and this length would be suitable to the majority of dresses.
When you choose a knee length it runs 45 inches and hits at your knee. It can be worn with mid calf length wedding dresses very nicely.
Then there is the floor length veil or ballet length. These should just brush the floor and at 72 inches looks lovely on a floor length dress without a train.
Chapel length veils are roughly 90 inches and look best when partnered with a dress that has a train.
Finally, the cathedral length measuring 120 inches. Some of these veils can extend to nine feet on the ground. They are most beautiful when worn with a classic full length dress.
Tiers:
Veils come with a one, two or three tiers and if your dress is sophisticated look then a one tier veil does well.
A two or three tier looks very nice with a romantic style dress as does a dress of classic lines.
Multiple tier veils are also good if you are planning on a simple hairstyle as the tiers tend to cover the hairdryer more then a single tier.
Color:
It is important to match the color of the veil to the color of the dress. Remember there are colors of white to consider. Of course, if your dress is a color it should match the color you have chosen for your dress.
Veil Widths:
There are typically three widths of veil and each creates a different degree of fullness at the sides.
The least fullness is in the 54 inch veil both at the side and the top. It hangs behind your shoulders so is nice with a dress that has decorative sleeves, straps or bodice you want people to see.
If you choose a 72 inch width it will be moderate in height and width and there will be some coverage around the arms.
Match it with a shoestring strap dress for a very romantic look.
For the most fullness on top and arms and shoulders the 108 inch veil should be your choice.
If you are wearing a more sophisticated wedding dress this width might seem overdone.
Decoration:
There are many ways a veil can be finished. Be sure and select a finish that works well with your dress.
If your dress is more structured than a thicker ribbon edge will complement you and if you are wearing a simple style a more decorative edge might be your choice.
A soft, romantic dress looks to look better with a simple cut edge.
A suggestion is to have your veil finished in the color of your bridesmaids dresses.
It is also important to consider your body shape, face shape and of course hair style when making your wedding veil choice.
Whatever you choose if you are guided by these suggestions it will be just right for you on your wedding day of days.
