Is It Okay to Marry an Older Bride?

[ad_1]

When you talk about a shaadi, the picture that comes to your mind is a young man smart and dandy but has a look responsible and a bride who is pretty, fresh and looks innocent. Can not the bride be smart and responsible too? Of course she can, but she has to be pretty, fresh and innocent too.

This typecasting of the nature and behavior of grooms and brides who enter into matrimony has been prevalent almost all around the world and over many ages. The main reasons being that women were not raised at par with men, and it was always the man's prerogative to provide for and protect his family. As the role of women in society started changing, it was no longer customary for the groom to provide for and protect the family. Women no longer hitched on to a man who could provide but would build her own career and then choose a man with what she would like to spend her life with. Parents no longer expect their daughter to get married as soon as possible so that they feel comfortable that their daughter who will provide and protect her.

In spite of the changed social, economic norms prevailing in the world today, the picture of a bride and groom has not yet changed. People look down on the groom if the bride is more accomplished than the groom. Parents will always look for a match with a groom who is more qualified than their daughter. If you ask them the reason, they will say "How can my daughter respect a man who earns less than her or is less qualified than her?" It will take some time for people to come to terms with the fact that paycheck and educational qualifications are not the criteria for understanding respect. Salary, bank balance, and design take precedent to the uprightness or character of a man when evaluating his worth. Unfortunately, women themselves are guided to believe in the same values.

It is on rare occasions that you will find a woman who is self made and independently decides to choose a man of her liking with whatever she would like to spend her life with. Although progressive families realize the fact that a bond of matrimony between the bride and groom is on equal terms, it is still to become a precalent in all strata of the society.

While we are talking about getting in terms with a matrimony where both the spouse enter on equal terms, it will not be out of place to analyze the case where the bride is more accomplished or older than the groom. Is it OK for men to marry an older woman? There should not be any hesitation in answering the question with an affirmative if one keeps in mind the thought process mentioned above.
