Secrets to a Do-It-Yourself Wedding

[ad_1]

Do-it-yourself (DIY) weddings can save you a lot of money and add your personal charm, making your wedding day even more special. There are some things that you will need to take into consideration before you decide if a DIY wedding is for you:

Do You Have the Time?

The very first thing to consider is if you can make the time commitment that planning your own wedding requires. There are many details (big and small) that need to be managed. To help yourself see if you have the time to devote to a DIY wedding, begin by writing a list of all the projects and details that need to be considered and then assign a time value to each one. For example, how long do you think it will take you to make the table decorations? How long do think it will take you to decide on and book a venue? After you have decided how much time each item will take, add them up, and then whatever that figure says, add on 25 percent more because rarely does anything fit in the time frame that you have given it.

Are You a Great Organizer?

If you have trouble completing projects or remembering what you need to get done each day, planning a wedding is probably not your thing. Many people do not realize how many details are involved in planning an event. To help stay organized, get a big notebook with plenty of pockets and use it to hold all of your contracts, ideas, receipts and lists. You can even find some great planners online that can help you, some of which are even free.

Do You Have a Creative Soul?

Deciding to make those amazing table treatments that you saw on Pinterest may sound like a good idea, but unless you are handy with a pair of scissors and a glue gun, you could end up with something that looks cheesy and thrown together. Decide on projects that you know you can handle. There are some wonderful ideas out there for DIY wedding projects, but be honest about your own skill level before deciding on a project. It will save you time and money, which usually are in short supply.

Do You Have Supportive Friends and Family?

If you have people you can lean on to help out, that's great. If your future mother-in-law is an amazing cook, ask her for help planning the menu. Plan a couple of nights where the girls get together, and over wine and hors d'oeuvres, you can get some of the craft projects out of the way. Do not be afraid to ask for help if you need it.

Can You Handle Stress?

I saved this for last for a good reason. By the time you have answered the other questions, your stress level probably went up a notch or two. A DIY wedding can be very stressful and if it gets out of hand, it can spoil the experience. Make sure you can handle the stress that it will bring into your life. There will no doubt be problems, and not everything will run smoothly. However, you certainly do not want it to get out of hand and spill over into your relationships, especially with your soon-to-be husband. Be honest with yourself.

In taking in the good and bad into consideration and deciding that a DIY wedding is for you, take a deep breath and strap yourself in for the ride. The pride that you will feel when it all comes together will be priceless. Your sense of style and creativity will allow you to have a wedding that is uniquely your own.
