5 Tips to Choosing the Perfect Men’s Dress Shirt

[ad_1]

With all the choice out there, it can be a difficult to find the perfect men’s dress shirt and whether you are buying for yourself or for a friend/relative the following tips will provide answers to all your queries.

Step One

The very first step to choosing the perfect men’s dress shirt is deciding on the color. It is a good idea to pick out a few colors beforehand – colors that you know are well suited to your complexion and hair color for example. However, then you need to consider the occasion or when you will be wearing your shirt.

Here are a few examples of colors for certain occasions:

Formal Occasions In most cases this will be an interview or conference where you need to look smart and formal. You should avoid bright colors or bold prints, rather muted colors such as a pale blue or gray. White tops all of the colors though when you want to look conservative at formal occasions.

Informal Occasion. If the occasion is less formal and you wish to attract attention then brighter colors are a better option. Popular choices include pinks, lavenders, greens and oranges.

Step Two

Once you have decided on a color or selection of colors then you can move onto the next step which is deciding on a pattern or print. Most patterns fall into either stripes or plaids, both of which can make a nice change to wearing solid colors. Be careful though as patterned shirts are often harder to match with a tie, seen as though most ties are patterned and with more than one color. Unless you have a good few solid color shirts in your wardrobe already, you should probably build up a collection of those first as they are easier to match with the rest of your dress. Then you can start to experiment with patterns and prints. On the other hand, for a more casual mens dress shirt that doesn’t require a tie you could get away with wearing a patterned shirt.

Step Three

Now with the color and pattern choices decided you can work your way through the options of style and fit. Men’s dress shirts can come tapered or as a full-cut, the latter being the more standardized fit but tapered-cut being the more modern variety.

The collar is also something that needs some thought as they can come as either standard or spread, with buttons or without. The spread collar is favored by younger men and gives a more trendy appearance, it is also wider than the standard collar and for this reason it can be carried off better by a man with a slim build as to a man with a stockier build. Here are the choices of the overall fit of a dress shirt:

Athletic-Fit. A full-cut shirt at the chest, which is tapered from the waist down.

Tailored-Fit. An allover slimmer fitting shirt.

Standard-Fit. An allover full-cut shirt that doesn’t cling to the body.

Step Four

Now you will need to get some measurements done – most shops that sell dress shirts will be able to take the measurements for you and give you further guidance on choosing a suitable shirt. The two important measurements will be the size of the neck and the length of your arms. The result of these two measurements will determine the size of shirt you need which are categorized by small, medium, large, x-large and xx-large.

Step Five

With the color, fit and size all decided upon you should be very near to purchasing your dress shirt. Once you have your desired dress shirt you might choose to complete the look with a tie. As with the shirt, a block color tie is the most formal of options, but if the occasion is less formal then go for a print that compliments the color of your shirt.
