When shopping for your perfect wedding dress, one of the most important things to consider is: which styles best suit your body shape? Taking a little time to work this out can prevent disappointment when trying on dresses that are just not going to flatter your physique, no matter how much you like them!
Most body shapes can be grouped into the following categories:
Hourglass – your waist is smaller than your bust and hips, which are approximately balanced in size.
Pear-Shaped – your hips are wider than your upper body.
Apple – your waist is wider than your hips and your bust.
Rectangle – your waist, bust and hips are the same width.
Inverted Triangle – your bust and upper body are larger than your waist and hips.
It's also pertinent to take into consideration whether you are particularly petite or tall, as this can effect the styles that suit you best. And though it might not an enjoyable exercise, making a note of the areas of your body you are not so confident about, or want to cover up can help with your dress choice.
When you try on a wedding dress, look at yourself from every angle, bringing someone along who will give you their honest opinion and be open to trying styles you might not have previously considered.
Here are some tips for choosing styles that suit each type of body type:
Hourglass – If you have an hourglass figure, you're lucky to be able to pick and choose from a variety of styles. Show off your curvaceous figure with sheath-style, mermaid and form-fitting wedding dresses. Do not try to be too sexy – your natural body shape does all the work for you, and cinching in your waist and having a low neckline can throw off your proportions.
Pear : Drawing attention to the shoulders and bodice area can help to detract from the hip and thigh area and create balance. Full ballgown style dresses may emphasize the parts you're hoping to cover up! Off the shoulder styles, empire-waist and A-line wedding gowns suit this figure type.
Apple : Lengthening the body is the aim with apple-shaped figures. A-line and empire waist wedding dresses help to disguise problem areas and show off curves in the right places. V neck styles and loose, flowing fabric that skims the body also add a flattering look. Avoid busy detailing around the bodice as it draws attention to your waist – instead, keep details to the lower skirt or neckline.
Rectangle : Styles that look great on rectangle shapes are A-line and Princess style wedding dresses. Empire waist styles also look great on this type of figure. Choosing a wedding gown that gives the illusion of a waistline and curves can make you look stunning, such as corset-styles and bodices with pleating and ruching. Asymmetrical dresses which sweep across the body will look fantastic, too.
Inverted Triangle : Adding details at your waist or on the skirt of your wedding dress draw attention to these areas, and away from a larger bust. Necklines to suit this shape include V-neck, halterneck and sweetheart. Only go for a strapless gown if you have a good, supportive bra, however! Ballgown dresses can look beautiful on this figure as the large skirt helps to balance out your upper body.
For petite ladies, you'll want to add height to your silhouette, which helps to elongate your body. Princess style wedding dresses and gowns with vertical lines can do this especially well. If you are slim, consider a sheath-style dress to show off your figure and give an illusion of length. Ballgowns and long trains can look a bit overwhelming on a petite woman and shorten the figure even further. If you are tall and wish to shorten your appearance, full skirts, A-line and princess gowns can achieve this. As do basque, or V-pointed waists, which are also flattering on a tall, long figure.
And do not forget about underwear, bras and shapewear, all of which can help to sculpt and hide areas you are not happy with, and emphasize areas you're proud of!
No matter what your body shape, there IS a perfect wedding dress for you, that will make you look and feel fabulous!
