OK, ladies … we all know the key thing in choosing a dress is choosing one that looks fabulous. Naturally, you want to consider the shape, your figure, the style and the trimmings that will flatter you first, and then narrow down your choices. From there, the location of your wedding comes into play. If you're getting married in a large cathedral, you may be considering a long, classically elegant train. If you're getting married on a boat, you probably want something you can travel with easily and change into the accommodations the boat or cruise offers. If you're getting married on the beach, you're probably not going to lean towards a long veil and train …
More often than not, I see beach wedding dresses that are either strapless or have spaghetti straps. They are generally simpler than dresses for, say, a church wedding – for good reason. Especially if you're getting married in someplace like St. George's. John, you want to consider how warm it will be and not sweating to death. You probably want to look for something either short or flowing, so you can catch the fantastic ocean breeze as you go through your ceremony.
Shorter-length dresses are more casual, but can be the perfect touch for the tone of your island beach wedding. Longer dresses are gorgeous, too … but sand and saltwater on your dress might be a consideration for you. Some of the best photos our brides take are jumping in or being transported into the ocean by their groom … and the dress, unfortunately, is not always made for swimming. If you want to pass it on a friend or save it, check with a cleaner about what can be done if you have sand and saltwater in your dress. Try to stay away from heavy beading, which weighs a dress down. Look for such light and airy fabrics as silk chiffon or organza.
You might also consider going barefoot. Definitely a romantic idea, it's also really comfortable. Having white or beaded sandals waiting for you to slip into keeps your toes from hurting in high heels, and you get to feel the warm sand between them. If you decide you're not up to baring your legs, be sure to have an extra pair of pantyhose handy: Bits of shells are sure to get caught in your stockings and cause snags.
Pearls, crystals, lace and beads are beautiful, feminine accents that look lovely in the sunshine with the sea behind you. Halter necklines also lend a more casual, beachy look.
You could also think about colors … non-traditional colors, like blues, yellows, pinks or greens, can look splendid with the ocean backdrop. It can also bring out your own color, as sometimes the bright sun, sand and white dress against pale skin can make you look extra-white.
Putting on the final touch with a sparkling hair clip or flowers in your hair, and possibly a pearl or diamond necklace and earrings can add an extra dash of class, or sentimental reference if it's a mother or grandmother's piece of jewelry.
InWeddingdress.com has some great ideas for dresses with great prices. It's a good place to start, so you can see the variety offered and then start thinking about your personal preferences.
