Hiring a wedding DJ can be a very scary thing. Afterall, most of us have a terrible image of a jerk in a tuxedo with greasy hair starring at the bridesmaids while sneaking drinks behind the DJ table.
Here's what you need to gauge when you hire a DJ.
1) Will this person show up with plenty of time to set-up or will I be scared on my special day?
You do not want "DJ Lazer setting up while you're making your grand entrance. when he says he's going to?
2) Is the amount he is charging me normal (between $ 300 to $ 1000) dollars?
Abnormal charge rates are symptomatic of two things. Either you are getting ripped off or the DJ has little top no experience.
3) Has he been proactive in helping me plan his portion of the wedding, or is he asking more questions than, "what time and where?".
A good DJ will add to the effectiveness of your organization and not subtract from it.
4) What does this equipment look like?
Good DJ's have reliable equipment. If you get an uneasy feeling looking at the equipment than just walk away.
Some additional tips: You should hire your DJ at least 2-3 months before your wedding. This will give him ample time to plan your events and to work with the people who are serving your wedding. Always give the DJ a deposit for his work and guarantee, but never pay the full amount up front. Doing so could set you up to be ripped off. And please, whatever you do, do not ruin your special day by hiring a friend / relative or someone who has no experience. You'll thank me for it later.
