A loss of volume is often not the only problem that you have to deal with if your hair is shedding or thinning. Depending on how long the problem continues, there may come a day when you notice that you can see the white of your scalp because there is no longer enough hair to cover the area or because you are experiencing patterned loss. This is often more troubling to folks than a loss of volume because this is harder to hide. In the following article, I’ll discuss some ways to deal with this problem.
Products To Camouflage The Scalp Showing Through: These products are a short term fix, but they do keep you from worrying that people are focusing on your peeking through scalp. There are powders that come in different colors to match your hair color that help to blend in your scalp so that the white is not so jarring. Examples are products like toppik, couvre, and derma match. They basically all work on the same principal. You sprinkle the fibers into the area where you are seeing white and this area becomes closer to your hair color so it is not as noticeable. When I had to use this (before I recovered from my hair loss) I was so afraid that this would look fake, but it really doesn’t. Unless someone is going to examine your scalp with a magnifying glass, you can’t tell.
My very good friend used to joke out loud and wonder if these products were like the infomercial where the guy was spray painting his bald spot. I guess the concept is the same, but it gives a much more realistic look. One caveat with these products is that you must use them sparingly because if you don’t they clump. They also make a mess of your counter and, if you use too much, they show up on the shoulder area of your clothing. (You can use a towel to avoid this.) I also noticed that I shed slightly more after their use so I saved them for occasions when I knew that I was going to be self conscious.
Toppers And Hair Pieces To Over The Exposed Scalp: If the problem gets so bad that products like toppik no longer provide enough coverage, you should know that there are very small hair pieces that just cover the one problem area. Examples are the crown, the part line, and the bang area. Now, you have to do your research and chose a piece that blends with both the color and texture of your hair and this can require trial and error, but if you can find a good piece that is properly “cut in” and someone to teach how to apply it correctly, then this can be virtuously undetectable.
Regrowing Your Hair So That You Don’t Have To Worry About Your Scalp: Of course, the best case scenario is to fix the problem in the first place. This process really requires two successful steps. First, you have to figure out why you are thinning in that area and address it. Then, you have to reduce the inflammation (and androgens) on your scalp and stimulate it so that you can produce healthy and plentiful hair again. If you can do this, then you won’t have to worry about camouflage because there is really nothing like your real hair. Yes, there are products out there that can give you your confidence back that look very natural, but never give up trying to regrow your own hair, as you may just be one step away from finding your trigger and fixing it.
