In order to get started with adding extensions to short hair styles, you will first need to purchase real human hair extensions that can clip in. Real hair is best so that you can style them using heated appliances. If you use synthetic ones, you will have a hard time styling them properly.

When you work with hair extensions you apply them below layers of your natural hair. When you are ready to install the extensions you will first need to section off your hair by taking about a 3/4 large section (like you would as you were going to create a high ponytail only you need to leave a small section down at the base. The base is where the neck and back of the head meet.) Now pile it onto the crown of your head and fasten it with a clip, so that it stays out of the way. You should now be left with just a thin and small layer of hair at the back of the head / neck area. Now take the clip in extensions and start by clipping the right clip into your natural hair first, then clip the left clip in and finally the middle clip.

Next you undo the pony tail section and create another high pony tail section and again leaving another section of hair down which should be just about 1 inch above the section you just clipped in. The idea is that the new layer of natural hair will fall over the extension piece you just attached meanwhile leaving you with a new section of natural hair to attach your second piece to. If you do not have a section that is equal in width to cover the back of the head section like the first extension piece you applied, then you can use a few smaller sections to work your way around the back of the head and clipping the side of the head just above the ear area.

Section the hair again in the same fashion, leaving a new thin section of hair to cover over the previous extension pieces. You should now be using 2 clip extension pieces here. You will probably need 3 of these 2 clip sections to go around the back of the head, which is fine.

Then you will section the hair again in the same fashion as previous steps. Once again leaving a thin layer of hair down to cover the latest extension clips. Now add a few small sections in a random order. It does not have to be too uniform looking in that they are lined up perfectly.

Finally, you will have to section the sides of your head area. Take a small section of hair just about 3 inches above the ear area and clip a small section here. Repeat on the other side of the head too.
When you have finished adding the pieces in, it is best to style your hair with a curling iron. Curling the extensions will help blend in your natural hair with the extensions for a flawless look.
