How to Wear a Tartan Sash

[ad_1]

Wearing a tartan sash is a tradition that is followed by a lot of women in Scotland. With due respect to the olden customs and traditions, we can find lots of Scottish ladies wearing such a sash during different occasions. These tartan sashes are so important in Scottish weddings. But if you closely observe, there are quite a few different styles followed by women to wear a sash. Though there is no specific or official direction which states the different styles to be followed, the sash styles used by various women are just a carry forward of traditions. Still there are good percentages of people who confuse about wearing it.

How to tie a tartan sash

Take your tartan sash in your hand and fold it to half. Now close the other end of it with a rubber band, so that it makes a bow shape. Now rest the closed end of the sash on to your shoulders and the other end on your hip. If you fix the sash on your left shoulder, make sure the other end of the sash rests on the right hip. This makes a tartan sash to diagonally cover your left breast and the left portion of the back in the rear. Make sure you use safety pins to secure the sash tightly on your shoulder and hip.

Types of tartan sashes

Different classes of Scottish women use different types of tartan sash styles keeping their traditions in the mind. There is a strong following of sash styles that were approved by Lord Lyon King of Arms. According to him, there are four different styles of sashes.

Clans women: The clans women of Scotland wear a sash which generally brooches on right shoulder. The other end of sash will be pinned at the right hip thus making a diagonal sash which covers the right breast.

Chieftain wives: The wives of chieftains, colonels and men belong to Scottish regiments wear a different type of tartan sash. Here the sash is pinned to the left shoulder and the other end will be rested on their right hip.

Country dancers: The country dancers generally wear tartan sash in such a way that it doesn’t cover the front side of their body. One end of the sash is pinned on the right shoulder and the other end is buttoned to the belt in the lower back, so that the tartan sash clears out in the front portion of the body.

Apart from these, most of the women wear a general style where the sash is pinned on their right shoulder and the other end extends down towards the end of the left hip. This is the common style adopted by many women to attend evening parties, meetings and other events. There is also a special style for women who married men of other clans. They wear a tartan sash over the right shoulder, but they pin the other end of the sash right on their left hip.
