Come June and July high school is finishing for hundreds and thousands around the country and indeed around the world, 5 years of fun, not really studying and good friends has come to an end and it’s time to grow up. Aside from perhaps your wedding day and the occasional ‘prince and princesses’ fancy dress, prom is the one night where you can put on that dress with too many sparkles, rock those too high heels and back comb your hair into the high heavens without anyone saying you’re showing off. Think Gatsby flapper dresses lengthened and embellished. Whilst 20s dresses are more commonly associated with flapper girls and showing a bit of leg, look for a longer beaded gown to make sure you maintain a modern classy feel whilst still rocking your vintage style prom dress. As fashion heads into the early 30s, dresses are becoming far more wearable and the flapper dress is now much longer.
The middle of the 40s transitioning into the 50s sees the introduction of the ‘house wife’ dress, empire line bodices and shin length pleated skirts worn over a petticoat for texture, dresses for women are now suited for their day to day life. Pastel coloured tulle and beehives, picture Olivia Newton John at her prom in the movie Grease.
When talking about the 70s, there should be a constant mental image of psychedelic floral patterns, you can maintain this theme throughout if you really want to dazzle but for a more down to earth and prom appropriate look, stick to very plain colours but really splash out when it comes to textures. Chiffon, silk and organza, if it’ll float in the wind, wear it!
If you’re looking for an edgier Madonna vibe, 80s dresses are the one for you, faux satin polyester and puffball sleeves, you’ll have to have guts to pull it off that’s for certain. If ethereal princess is the look you’re aiming for however, stick to what you know, find a vintage style dress that fits your body shape and makes you feel like a million dollars.
