The father of the bride has just finished his speech and now, deep breath, it's your turn. The whole of the room is silent and looking straight at you, waiting for you to deliver the speech of your life. Get this right and you are the hero of the day, but get it wrong …
The secret of an excellent groom's speech is mainly down to the amount of time spent on planning and preparation. However the small matter of organizing the wedding often gets in the way of this. After your attention being dropped this way and that you really do need to set time aside to work on your speech.
Although it is known as a grooms speech you will usually, unless the bride chooses to make a speech of her own, make the speech on behalf of yourself and your new wife. It is therefore customary to start off the speech by referring to 'my wife and I'. That's typically good for a giggle at least, and so breaks the ice.
Now that you have the audience on your side you need to thank both sets of parents, and all those who assisted with the wedding preparations. You also need to give thanks to the best man, the maid of honor or chief bridesmaid, and any other members of the bridal party. Also thank all the guests who have gathered to celebrate the start of your married life together.
You should then give thanks to the speech just given by your new father-in-law, acknowledging his points and comments and saying that you really do care about his daughter and promise to look after her.
This leads you in nicely to the main section of your speech, and you can start with details of how you first met your wife, the experiences you shared together, and what made you decide that you wanted to spend the rest of your life with her . Try not to look as if you are reading from your speech when you tell your wife how wonderful she looks today, and confess how much you are looking forward to a happy existence together.
End your grooms speech with a humorous but well dig at the best man. It's his turn to give a speech next and he'll almost certainly have a pop at you, so this is you chance to get in first. Then hand over to the best man for his speech, while begging in vein for him to go easy on you.
Writing a speech from scratch is not an easy or quick process. Some grooms spend ages starring at a blank piece of paper, before being forced to abandon it to do something really urgent, like checking emails (again).
After a while it becomes obvious that a little help is required, which invariably involves searching the internet for ideas. However it soon becomes clear that the sentences out there are poor quality and cliche ridden, and have probably been used at previous weddings that your guests have attended.
All is not lost because as you can obtain examples of sentences written by expert writers and speakers that you can adapt to suit to your particular circumstances and your preferred style of delivery. These examples can be mixed and matched to generate a unique groom's speech perfectly suited to your personality.
