As part of your best man duty you will be a key figure in the planning of the wedding. You will assist the groom in selecting the wedding attire and accessories for the male bridal party and you should be present at any dress rehearsals. In the build up to the wedding you will have been reliable and supportive and this will not have gone un-noted but what happens if something goes wrong on the big day itself? Well for a start all your efforts over the past few months will probably be immediately forgotten. Nobody is going to realistically point the finger of blame at the bride and groom, which puts the best man in the firing line.
Ok, so maybe you will not be shot but if you do not want to suffer the wrath of bridezilla take off that blind fold and read on because this post is your get out of jail free card. I want to ensure that you do not learn the hard way, so I have created the top 10 items (as well as the groom, rings and speech) that any best man should have with him on the wedding day.
1. Emergency alternative numbers
What happens if on the day of the wedding the photographer ends up with appendicitis or the caterer cancels? Well for a start everyone will stare at you for a solution and unless you're able to perform heavenly miracles I suggest you have those emergency numbers ready.
2. Money
I would strongly advise having not only money but some spare cash with you on the day of the wedding. You may have thought this would be number one on my list. Well let me tell you as the best man you can get through the day without money but do you want to explain to the wedding guests why there is no food at the reception?
3. Mobile phone
Whether you call it a mobile phone, a cell phone or your right arm on the day of the wedding do not forget it. Not only may you need to make those emergency calls but someone may need to contact you too, so make sure the phone is fully charged and the time and date are set correctly.
4. A list of names
Although it is not realistic to expect you to know all the guests by name, it is always appreciated when you can approach someone and call them by their names. I would advise having a list of key people and important family members that you may not know personally.
5. Spare set of prompt cards
Bestman speaks, despite being the most anticipated of the wedding sermons are also the part most people dread. Well believe it or not some of your life-long friends may find it highly amusing if your prompt cards were to mysteriously disappear ten minutes before your big moment. I would strongly advise having a set set of speech prompt cards which you can rely on.
6. Pen
As part of your best man duty you will be busy performing many tasks. You may wish to make an adjustment to your speech or be asked to pass a message on to the bride and groom. Having a pen at the ready will take the pressure off you trying to remember everything.
7. Umbrella
Ok, so I live in the UK and I do not trust the weather. Obviously this point is weather dependent, however I would still advise making this provision in case the weather changes through the day. You do not need to carry it with you but believe me if the bride comes out of the church you will be looked at favourably for saving her hair and makeup.
8. Essential medical bag
Let me clarify, I do not mean a first aid chest stocked with bandages and a surgeons kit. I simply mean an essential bag of medicines that you may need. As an example, I suffer from hay-fever so I would ensure I have my allergy tablets. The best mans speech is far easier to perform without itchy eyes and sneezing. Another essential item to have in your medical bag is plasters. You may not wear shoes regularly and you will be doing a lot of walking and dancing, which is far easier without blisters.
9. Mints
During the day you will be speaking to and dancing with a lot of people. This will inevitably mean that you will be up close and personal, so carry a pack of mints in your pocket. Believe me guys you will be thanking me for this tip.
10. Deodorant
It is going to be a long and busy day. Through the wedding day you will be assisting with the organizing and doing a lot of running around. You will be meeting people and dancing and then you'll be sweating when it comes to that best mans speech. I would advise having some certain deodorant on hand and maybe aftershave so you can freshen up at the reception.
