Wedding Etiquette: Tips for Calling Off a Wedding

[ad_1]

While weddings are supposed to be blissful and full of lots of joy, sometimes the situation does not always go that way. Unfortunately, some couples do have to call off their weddings. This is quite stressful to do, and it can be quite hurtful to the person who winds up being in charge of canceling everything. What are some tips of etiquette to follow when doing so?

Written Announcements
If you still have a decent amount of time until the wedding, then it is most advisable that you send a printed announcement to all of the guests. Yes, it might seem like a tedious task; however, discussing such situations over the phone can bring you a lot of sadness. Additionally, calling someone to state that the wedding is off can be awkward for the person on the other end of the phone.

Enlisting Help
Sometimes, when the wedding is just a short time away, you are simply going to have to call people. Normally, it is not polite to have someone else make the phone calls for you. This case is an exception to the rule though. Yes, if you are able to make the calls, you should do so yourself. Still though, it is a traumatic situation, and it's fine to ask a parent for some help.

Returning the Gifts
Chances are, you have already received some presents whether they were from the engagement party, bridal shower or another sort of wedding event. According to the rules of etiquette, you need to return these presents. Some guests may feel funny taking them back, but you need to at least try. If the guests do not want to take them away from you, you could return them to the store yourself or divide them up amongst you and your ex-fiance.

Engagement Ring Etiquette
No doubt exists that this situation is a difficult one to resolve. Generally, it is right for the woman to give the ring back to the man. After all, he did spend a lot of money on it. If it is a ring from the man's family, then the bride absolutely needs to return it. Now, in the event that the ring is from the bride's family, then no reason exists why the man should take it back. This matter can get complicated though, and it's important for the ex-couple to have some sort of discussion about it.

Calling off a wedding is not a happy matter, but when it has to be done, doing it with grace and integrity can make it easier for everyone involved.
